AFL-CIO to announce $750 million plan for Chicago
AP ^ | July23, 2005

WASHINGTON The A-F-L-C-I-O has chosen Chicago to benefit from a 750 (m) million dollar community investment plan to be used to help spur economic development and create union jobs.

Stephen Coyle -- chief executive officer of the A-F-L-C-I-O Housing Investment Trust -- says the formal announcement is to be made Tuesday by A-F-L-C-I-O President John Sweeney during the labor federation's 50th annual convention in Chicago.

Coyle says Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D-C, also were considered. But Chicago was chosen because of its large union population and its history of being a good place to make union investments.

The five-year investment program targets the needs of working families.

In a way, it's a direct payment to Daley, a democrat. Chicago has been losing a lot of federal money for being such a staunch liberal city, for no good reason.

Simply means that the rich union bosses and their underlings will benefit and the real poor will become poorer and, the AFL-CIO will justify that "enough isn't being done" and blame Bush.

"I hope they are not using cash that should be going to the dems!!"

Not to worry. They are pension funds which the taxpayers will eventually have to make good on.
Not to mention the government-backed mortgages that will be repaid by you know who.

It shows again how effective and relevant UNIONS ARE -- when they have to take their own money to create jobs for their members....UNION SOCIALISM?? And will the ACLU be there when the AFL-CIO says they will hire only UNION MEMBERS for these jobs?? Job discrimination, anyone??

Tammany Hall raises up its ugly head again!!!

used to help spur economic development and create union jobs.

More pork. More wasted money. The key word here was "union"

Three quarters of a billion dollars. This damn sure won't play with the rank and file. Sweeney and the AFL-CIO are hell bent on doing the red two step no matter what the rank and file think.
It will be better for union members if the AFL-CIO is dissolved and replaced by a member focused organization. To hell with Sweeney and his social programs.

So, basically, the AFLCIO is taking money from members all over the country to spend money on Chicago members. Do I have that right?

SSHHHHHHH! At least they are pouring it into a very blue state. I'm thrilled that they aren't building it in Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa or Florida!

I don't think it will go to the members directly. The projects will all be developed and they get their piece. And someone has to approve the projects and they get their piece. And someone has to take credit for the project and they get their piece up front with the cameras.

Now I don't know how many places Daley or his brothers will be getting theirs, but I could guess.

Good point. Not to mention that, by definition, it will generate less-than-market returns by limiting the investment to pro-union causes.

The union death spiral continues.

American Federation of Losers,Criminals,Ingrates, and Oddballs.

I think the federation of losers is about to get divorced from the criminals, ingrates and oddballs.

Unless Hillary actually manages to pull off the democratic miracle of all miracles, and stop the split.

Its pretty well known she is fighting tooth and nail and doing everything under the sun (not to mention cover of night) to keep the split from happening.

It's just a "Big Dig" with the old communist's "five-year plan" thrown in. How fricking pathetic.

I love hearing high school grads bitch about making $85-120K a year above and below the IRS radar in production and construction jobs. Their wages go up but they live in states that tax most of the gains away , plus the union dues... and the graft.. and they can't figure out why they're still falling behind economically.

It's just simple economics, if 100,000 people can lay rebar, weld, pipe-fit, cut wood, trim, hang wall board, work PVC pipe... well guess what, unless you're especially better, then you're gonna get paid lower than somebody that has a skill or work ethic that is held by fewer people.

Either you own the business, own the skill and are willing to withold it, or you are at the whim of whoever writes the check.

I'd of thought the "union" rank and file would finally wake up, but they are too frightened and/or stupid to see the waste and corruption. ..... screw em. Wait till all the auto manufacturers go the way of the textile workers.... I'll just sit and laugh my a@# off as Detroit becomes Newark's poor cousin.hahahahahaha

I'm gonna write a letter of support that they throw the full Billion into Chicago... what a winter wonderland.

Considering Johns Sweenys proud membership in the "Democratic socialist" affiliation (not sarcasm, its a real political party, and he carries his membership card in his wallet), union socialism would make sense.
