Tom Tancredo has been called a one-trick pony of a politician, a man out of step with his party, a bigot. The Republican congressman vehemently opposes illegal immigration, and he created an uproar last week when he talked about nuking Muslim holy sites.
"Unless I misread the political tea leaves, there is a great deal of support for what I say," Tancredo said.
Experts say Tancredo has no chance at the White House, but like Ross Perot's campaign on a balanced budget in 1992, he has found an issue that could force other Republicans to treat immigration as a major issue.

Tom Tancredo's even considering the possibility of a win in 2008 is solid proof of that.
It's all in the tea leaves. He stands much better of a chance than many in the GOP care to consider and one that is likely to gain more momentum with each passing day that Americans percieve immigration is out of control.
"Unless I misread the political tea leaves, there is a great deal of support for what I say," Tancredo said.
Tancredo vs Hillary = Clintons moving back into WH.
If he were the R nominee (which he won't be), he'll be ripped to shreds and left bleeding to death on the floor by the Left. He'll be made into a three-headed, racist, right-wing nutbag. The center (which is where we have to draw votes) will be scared to death of him when it's all over. Game over - Hillary wins.
He's already sunk his career. He's the punchline of a joke now.
Neither one would survive the primaries. We KNOW that for a fact with McLame....he's a retread.
President Bush faces a major rebellion within his own party if he follows through on a promise to push legislation that would offer millions of illegal immigrants a path to U.S. citizenship. Almost no issue divides Republicans as deeply.
I'm not worried about Bush being re-elected.
Right. Forgot. We can't possibly nominate someone who will speak the truth. Sorry, teach.
I don't believe Tom Tancredo can be or even really wants to be elected but I'll vote for him if it wakes up the government to the problem of illegal immigration.
This may be true, but you have to respect the guy for not being politically correct
We did in 2000 and again 4 years later. Unless, of course, you're part of the "Bush lied" contingent that I'm sick to death of.
I respect him for speaking his mind....yes.
The ol' devil "racist" shtick is wearing out I think. More and more I hear people actually saying they are tired of the race hustle crap and I think this scam is comparable to Communism circa 1989.
The guy sounds "out there" but he's saying some things that need to be said.
fear mongering?...not unlike the Swatzenegger-McClintock debates...
McCain the great 'Republican' candidate?
Thankfully, we don't have to worry about McCain or Arnold being the party nominee.
