DENVER - Tom Tancredo has been called a one-trick pony of a politician, a man out of step with his party, a bigot.
The Republican congressman vehemently opposes illegal immigration, and he created an uproar last week when he talked about nuking Muslim holy sites.
No matter, Tancredo is pressing on and even hinting at a long-shot presidential bid in 2008.
Tancredo has already visited New Hampshire and Iowa this year, and says he found a welcome audience among voters who are fed up with the nation's immigration policies, including proposals by President Bush.
"Unless I misread the political tea leaves, there is a great deal of support for what I say," Tancredo said.
Tancredo raised eyebrows last week by telling a radio talk show host that "you could take out" Islamic holy sites should terrorists ever launch a nuclear attack against the United States.
"You're talking about bombing Mecca," asked the host.
"Yeah," Tancredo responded, saying he was "just throwing out some ideas." He later said his comments were taken out of context and refused to apologize.
Few consider Tancredo a serious challenger for the GOP presidential nomination, but his stance resonates with some in a post-September 11 era when volunteer groups like the Minutemen have been patrolling the border for illegal immigrants.
Tancredo would like the United States to patrol its borders with the military. He said the U.S. also needs a guest worker program that requires employers to prove a need for short-term labor, without amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Esteban Flores, executive director of the Latino Research and Policy Center in Denver, calls Tancredo a bigot who is trying to use racial division to further his career. He compared Tancredo to George Wallace, the outspoken opponent of desegregation.

I'm not for open borders, am not for ANYONE doing ANYTHING illegal, I've NEVER been a "Muslim apologist", I'm an American citizen ( I was born here, as were generations of my family !), did I miss anything? LOL
Voting fringe party is stupid beyond belief! It NEVER "teaches a lesson" to the people you want it to, but it sure helps get the Dem candidate.
You should post an adress and I'll mail you my greasy shorts for your dinner.
"which gave us 8 years of clinton."
Actually it was the republican party that gave the US 8 years of the Clintons with "No New Taxes" and "No More Erections".
That goes for me too. I didn't leave the Republican Party, it left me. I'm a conservative, but the majority of them are not. We have a man who has the courage to say it like it is. He's the man we need. Bush bends over for Mexico, the UN and Muslims. I'm sick to death of his compassionate spending. Our great grandkids will still be paying for AIDS in Africa by the time they have grandkids.
Given a lot of what I've read on FR lately, you had better put a sarcasm tag at the end of your message. Some people are likely to take you seriously. In fact, I'm not even sure you're joking.
Think ya ought ta wash your shorts from time to time?
... Voting fringe party is stupid beyond belief!...
Then why the heck do you advocate voting for the lessor of two evil parties that both want to dissolve this nation?
Tancredo: He would out-terrorize the terrorists. Under our beloved Commander in Chief Tancredo, suicide-bomb vest will become standard issue for US Marines.
How anybody is mesmerized by this huckster is beyond me.
Not for COEXERJ145, I better save them up.
He's obviously hungry.
Isn't it time to recoat the walls with aluminum foil?
Because they think just like he does which explains why they simply shifted from Buchanan to Tancredo.
Since you appear to believe that both major parties want to "destroy" this country, you should either go buy yourself some island, which is far away from anywhere, or dig yourself a bunker and never come out. Oh yes, and do make certain that you have enough rolls of tinfoil. :-)
Isn't it time to knock off the overconsumption of the sugar free republican flavored drink?
I thought that he was one of the crazies in DR STRANGELOVE. :-)
Whatever you do, glassy eyed bot, don't click this link.
It's full of big words.
You aren't capable of understanding.
I'm going to do the same thing. He's the ONLY one who's speaking up for those of us who are sick of living with and paying for this illegal alien mess, and there are many millions of us.
DR. STRANGELOVE was crazy? What is insane about MAD?
Slim Pickens perhaps?
