Ah NO. It was political nitwits on the Hard Right who took seriously Bill Clinton's campaign propaganda about "a middle class tax cut" and Perot's propaganda about "eliminating the deficit". After 3 decades following politics I have discovered the secret for the Hard Right. They are not really interested in the messy job of actually building a coalition and ruling. They would rather stick out on the political fringes and spew hate at anyone trying to actually run the country. That is why whenever the Right side starts winning, the always malcontent on the Hard Right find some new issue to scream their bile about. Immigration is just their latest issue. The Hard Rightists, like the Hysteric Left, need some issue where they are in the minority so they can feel all virtuous about themselves while making absolutely sure no one will ask them to actually DO anything to move the country forward.
