DENVER - Tom Tancredo has been called a one-trick pony of a politician, a man out of step with his party, a bigot.
The Republican congressman vehemently opposes illegal immigration, and he created an uproar last week when he talked about nuking Muslim holy sites.
No matter, Tancredo is pressing on and even hinting at a long-shot presidential bid in 2008.
Tancredo has already visited New Hampshire and Iowa this year, and says he found a welcome audience among voters who are fed up with the nation's immigration policies, including proposals by President Bush.
"Unless I misread the political tea leaves, there is a great deal of support for what I say," Tancredo said.
Tancredo raised eyebrows last week by telling a radio talk show host that "you could take out" Islamic holy sites should terrorists ever launch a nuclear attack against the United States.
"You're talking about bombing Mecca," asked the host.
"Yeah," Tancredo responded, saying he was "just throwing out some ideas." He later said his comments were taken out of context and refused to apologize.
Few consider Tancredo a serious challenger for the GOP presidential nomination, but his stance resonates with some in a post-September 11 era when volunteer groups like the Minutemen have been patrolling the border for illegal immigrants.
Tancredo would like the United States to patrol its borders with the military. He said the U.S. also needs a guest worker program that requires employers to prove a need for short-term labor, without amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Esteban Flores, executive director of the Latino Research and Policy Center in Denver, calls Tancredo a bigot who is trying to use racial division to further his career. He compared Tancredo to George Wallace, the outspoken opponent of desegregation.

Fugetaboutit! This bozo couldn't get his whiney-ass elected in his home state let alone nationally!
Hooray!! Where do I send my (very first ever political) donation?
Of course! :-)
Bad Day At Black Rock
Tancredo? Wasn't he one of the original Star Wars characters?
Of course he is a joke but not to the old Buchanan Brigades who still gravitate to whichever candidate runs using the race card. With Buchanan it was all about the evil Jews. With Tancredo it is mostly about the evil Mexicans but he also rants about the evil Chinese, and now spews that nuclear genocide is an acceptable U.S. response to a terrorist attack.
Which for all intents and purposes will destroy the Republican Party. Personally this time around I don't give a rats tail who runs against the GOP candidate, if the GOP candidate is a Pro-Illegal type I will either not vote or vote for a third party. To say nothing of the time and money I am willing to invest to see that that sort of traitorist politician is outted for the traitor they are.
And as far as fringe parties influencing a major political party, it only sort of has, with THE DEMS, in recent times.
Bush is setting up Hilarius for 08.
They've covered all the angles.
Tancredo runs, the Evil wins with 39%.
Tancredo doesn't run, Hillary wins because the pubs run some lame rino, like Romney or McLunatictraitorthief and the base stays home in droves..
Some people have good ideas and out-of-control tongues. Makes for a deadly combination especially in the White House.
Ever notice that the pro-tancredo types always use the knee jerk pro-illegal, pro-open borders, pro-muslim terms, when it ain't true.
Deport Mullah Tancredo! ;-)
I suspect that any GOP candidate that refuses to address the immigration issue in a manner that does not cater to amnesty will lose the Southwest and the West. Therefore losing the whole election. Might be bad. You have to punish the party in power for what is wrong. Next time they will pay attention.
George H.W. Bush sucked so bad that the first eight years of Clinton was inevitable.
They are on the same team, anyway.
Of course they do. Their MO is to slander anyone they don't agree with and try to destroy them or bait them into getting themselves banned. Their buddy Boot Hill even keeps a hit list going on LoonyPlace with all the FReepers they want removed which includes Jim Robinson. In their warped sense of thinking, if you don't agree with them and with Tancredo, it means you support terrorists, treason, illegal immigration, or whatever lie they can come up with at the moment.
