I previously expressed the concern the author mentions here that when 200 bipartisanship Washingtonian insider power elite lawyers vouch for him- that means the man’s first allegiance is to the institutionalized legal system: translation, compromise and wishy-washy middle. He got nominate because Dubya found a consensus candidate that would appease dems, albeit with a slightly conservative lean. We got a male O’Connor.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, the attack on Ann Coulter on this Board was VICIOUS, REPREHENSIBLE AND DISGRACEFUL.

I read through 450 of the some 700+ posts relative to Ann Coulter’s article on the Robert’s nomination. Although, like any one else, Ann deserves to have her views scrutinized and criticized on this Board, it’s unconscionable that so many have denigrated her personally.

It is an absolute disgrace that some posters have attacked her for her body shape; and, her marital status; and, her facial features; and, her purported drinking habits; and imputed uninformed pseudo- psychoanalysis in this vicious ad hominem attack. If ANYONE in the conservative movement didn’t deserve such hypocritical treatment from her own, it is Ann Coulter.

I’m relatively new to the Board, but I remember Ann and Drudge participating in a rally telecast on CSPAN when Free Republic was in its infancy. She was there to support this Board, and has continually been one of the staunchest supporters of this Board. I recall her saying that, when she traveled and was feeling low, she logged on to Free Republic for sustenance. I remember at the rally, when she spoke to Freepers, she said “I love you guys”.

Without argument, she has been on the front lines in the battle against liberalism. Unlike those who attack her personally today from the safety and anonymity of their keyboards, she places herself physically in harm’s way every time she spreads the conservative philosophy at a university. We all know she is vulnerable to personal attack, and we have seen punks try to silence her by confronting her on stage and throwing pies in her face. What we witness on this Board today is FAR WORSE than a cream pie; it’s a vicious slap in the face. It’s an unmitigated abomination.

We all know that when the administration comes under assault, suddenly, the Board is overwhelmed with hatchet men. But the hatchet job done on Ann Coulter today was a Black Day for Free Republic. We attacked one of our most ardent supporters; we mugged the soul of the Board.

Those who engaged in this character assassination should be ashamed, but I know they are not. Ann Coulter is not, and should not be, above criticism as to her views- but these ad hominian attacks by keyboard assassins is dastardly and the pinnacle of ingratitude.

Ann fearlessly endures the attacks of liberals, and she does so in support of the causes that we hold dear. I don’t always agree with her, but God, I admire her courage. I couldn’t do what she does, and I am so much in her debt for doing for me that which I have no capacity to perform. God hope she has the good sense not to read the Board today- because I’m certain that with all she has endured on our behalf, this had to be the greatest betrayal of all.

To those assassins involved, Et Tu, Freepers?

It is all very well to counsel us to walk in Ann's moccasins; I think we have to walk in President Bush's - And Senator Frist's - as well.

People have urged that Bush nominate to the Supreme Court everyone from Thomas Sowell (my personal favorite BTW) to Janice Rodgers Brown, to Ann Coulter herself. And there is the president and the Senate majority leader, faced with a SCOTUS resignation effective only on the confirmation of her successor - excluding the possibility of a recess appointment - and a Republican Senate majority which resembles nothing so much as a herd of cats.

The reality is that the MSM Party, a.k.a. the "Democratic" Party, is weaker than it has been but it is still able by its flattery and derision to position Conservatives as being "out of the' mainstream'." It takes courage for senators who aren't from red states to do things like change the filibuster rule. And even the senior senator from red state Arizona tugs the Senate to the left. Bottom line, the Senate doesn't have the stomach for a flat-out, out-of-the-closet conservative SCOTUS nominee.

Bush has done as much as he knew how to get a stronger Republican Senate majority, and he has gone from 50-50 to 55-45. But even at that, with the number of northeasterners in the Republican caucus Bush can't ignore McCain et al. So we have a stealth candidate. Like Souter - but also like Thomas. And there you are. We gotta hope for the best. Ann counsels nominating Ann Coulter to SCOTUS, and the political situation just doesn't sustain that aggressive an approach.

I don't recall seeing many posts as bad as you describe, but I definitely did not parse the entire thread. Perhaps it went too far, I don't really know. I happen to agree with much of what Ann said, to the extent that I passed her commentary around to my circle of hard right rudder conservative friends--loyal American conservatives all.

As far as FR is concerned, you seem to be reacting to something that has concerned many of us for at least the past 2 or 3 years, and that is a perceived gradual drift to the left toward center. This may at least partially explain an excess of criticism directed at Ann. What I have been seeing, and I am very sorry to have to say it, is a forum that is now far more amenable to GOP Big Tent RINOs/Liberals/Moderates than it is to conservatives (and by that I mean loyal American conservatives). And that's a real shame. Most of us, by far, want FR to continue to be a conservative site for conservatives.

If Roberts wants to go down in history as one of the great SCUTUS justices he will help overturn Roe. Otherwise he protects the status-quo and becomes a Souter-clone.

It's possible though that Mr. Bush "read the soul" of Mr. Roberts and both men know conservative truths that neither man will speak of.
___________________________________________
I pray that Mr. Roberts is a Conservative, a Catholic and becomes an advocate for overturning RvW, upholding the US Constitution and interpreting the Laws as they were meant!

As far as being a Keyboard assain as to his character. I am willing to give this man a chance like anyone else. To accept Mr. Bush's ability to "Read the Soul" of this man. I have to rely on Mr. Bush's history in "Soul reading"! I submit to you that the President's record is questionable to poor, e.g. My good buddy Putty!!

I believe that Mr. Bush claimed to have looked into Good Buddy Putty's soul and claimed he could count on him to work on all of the issues that faced the two great powers. Of course this was true until that Soul Reading was tested and Russian equipment and advisors were pouring into Iraq up until US troops were probably a few blocks away.

The Russian involvement in the Oil for Food program is another example of the President's ability at "Soul Reading" and "My Good Buddy Putty" help and cooperation.

We, unfortunately, will not know until it's to late. Ann Coulter, inspite of the Keyboard assassins and other attacks by Liberal assassins on HER and HER character has always been profoundly loyal to the Conservative cause and this country.

I'm standing with ANN- I think we have another Liberal Ringer, I pray I'm wrong. It will be an Honor to eat Crow Pie with the likes of Ann Coulter.

Selecting a Supreme Court Justice is a little like purchasing a car without a warranty.

You like the lines and the performance but you don't know how reliable it's going to be until you buy it.

Ann is like a Car and Driver auto critic. She's done the test drive, pointed out the flaws and says, "Caveat Emptor".

You're totally correct. I too was disgusted at vile insults hurled at Coulter.

I came to the conclusion that there are a lot of Specter type RINO's and Liberals at Free Republic posing as conservatives. And you have to remember that school is out.

One way to disrupt this board and sow dissension is to pose as a "defender" of Bush and hurl insults and abuse at any conservative who disagrees. That way you get to smear Coulter while keeping the conservative mask on.

I appreciate your passionate defense of Ann. She is and hopefully, will always be on our side. More than some people around here appear to be. Still, there is no better place for raw conservative politics than FreeRepublic. It gets rough and I clench my teeth when we start to eat our own.

Tell it like it is, brudda. I also fully support your comments on fellow Freepers who denigrate her appearance or mannerisms, that is so-o-o-o third grade. They are my countrymen but God I wish they wouldn't do that.

Thank you for your post.

A few of us have been trying to say these things but the "conservatives" here are so rabidly in agreement with Leiberman the liberal about Roberts being the greatest candidate that they are ready to take down one of the few people who has been willing to do battle for truly conservative values. They figure on shooting or wounding their own if they can.

I doubt that Ann would be any less willing to applaud Roberts if he turns out to be conservative instead of moderately liberal than the rest of us would be to cheer him, too.

Roberts is the Rhenquist replacement/protege. If Rhenquist doesn't retire now he will have outfoxed Bush to be certain to take the court farther away from the Scalia/Thomas view and toward the kind of ruling on eminent domain he recently backed.

Tommie baby ----

What's got into ya'll tonight? Most honorable right of center conservatives and Christian conservatives are pleased with the nomination. And you should be too.

But I'll tell you what...Republicans are gonna be awfully upset if the new guy rules with the left wing on the SC this fall. Given that scenario - political blood will spill.
