A new Supreme Court nominee means another chance to stoke the incendiary debate on the issue of abortion. But for the lawyer wife of Federal Judge John G. Roberts Jr., the matter is clearly settled.
While Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr.'s views on abortion triggered intense debate on Capitol Hill this week, there was no mistaking where his wife stands: Jane Sullivan Roberts, a lawyer, is ardently against abortion.
A Catholic like her husband, Jane Roberts has been deeply involved in the pro-life movement. She lends her name, money and professional advice to a small Washington-based organization - Feminists for Life of America - that offers counseling and educational programs. The group has filed legal briefs before the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of abortion.
A spouse's views normally are not considered relevant in weighing someone's job suitability. But abortion is likely to figure prominently in the Senate debate over Roberts' nomination. And with his position on the divisive issue unclear, abortion rights supporters expressed concern that his wife's views might suggest that he also embraces efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.
"It's unclear how all this will affect her husband," said Jennifer Palmieri, a spokeswoman with the Center for American Progress, a liberal public policy group. "It's possible that he would have a different view than her. It's just that in the absence of information about this guy, people are looking at her and trying to read the tea leaves."....

I find it funny how the SCOTUS can hand down a rediculous and wrong decision with absolutely no precident, but once it's there, despite overwhelming public opinion, upholding R.v.W. has to be the litmus test that every potential nominee must swear to.
Why is it when the Dems are in power they bring in the most absurd activists around, but the Pubbies have to compromise by nominating someone who is for liberal judicial activism or be branded as a RW wacko? And people complain about the son/daughter double standard....
Moderate is what he described himself as, as did his supporters.
Former Senator Cohen (who later became secretary of defence under Clinton) was a republican who was also liberal and he was to the right of Heinz.
I'd be able to easily say that with maybe the exception of Rudman, Heinz was probably the most liberal republican in the senate at the time of his sad demise.
Interestingly, the media hated Teresa when she was his wife and it wasn't rare for them to mock her about being a drunk, something which is no longer mentioned since Heinz passed away.
depends on how liberal the status quo is.....
That's unfair. I had a child like that, but it looks to me as though this young man behaved better than mine usually did. It was as if any type of public attention just made her turn on a switch. She was consistently disciplined and loved, but I had to put up with comments like yours for years. Some children are just like that. Her terrible twos lasted at least 10 years and it was challenge to see if I would survive. I did, and miraculously, so did she. By the time she was a teen-age, I had a very well-adjusted and well-behaved child. I watched other parents struggle through their childs' teens. Mine was a breeze. Children are just extremely different.
Absolutely right, and may the tribe increase.
Of course not. She is not longer the wife of a <.cue the Darth Vader music> REPUBLICAN Senator! LOL
Yeah, and I heard Kerry also signed a SF-180, but can't afford a stamp to mail it in.
Maybe we call all chip in a send Kerry a pre-paid envolope so he can stick it in the mail.
what financial hardship? they'd get more in state aide than a lot of us do by working hard.
it a matter of not being able to run around partying, doing drugs, slutting around, drinking insatiably, etc. that worries some of these don't-wanna-be mothers.
that or fear of daddy disowning them and taking away the trust fund.
well, in some cases, probably both.
Exactly. What awesome strategery. Their best evidence of the answer they want is the one they can't use. HA HA. Hoist on their own pitard. Go 'W'. Of course JR BETTER not be the first we've heard of.
If your kid had my Dad for a father, she would have behaved like an angel in public when he was within eyesight. Guaranteed!
(5) A known liar appointed him.
Who really cares what his wife thinks? What does *he* think?
Does he think it should be overturned??
Do you have children? Maybe I should have said do you have sons, but it's been my experience the boys are more difficult to control when small and the girls when they're teenagers.
I think you're being too tough on this lady. It was past her kids' bedtime and she was able to keep them neat and clean looking in their Easter finery. Her son started acting up and she was not happy about it. What could she do? She couldn't cause a scene. Ever see a 3 or 4 year old get taken out of someplace where they're supposed to be quiet, like church for instance? They all yell at the top of their lungs, "Moooooommmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeee! Stop hurting me!" If she'd have yanked that kid, the libs would be having a field day right now.
Past bedtime and in front of a camera? I don't think so.
But wait....he'd have to leave his conservative Catholic church to get a divorce. Oh, of course...Kennedy & Schumer will demand that he do that as well.
Does she have a testicle lock box she'll use to assure he'll share the same view on Roe?
