WHAT'S the point? In the wake of the latest terrorist attacks in London, Mayor Bloomberg and the NYPD announced plans to conduct random searches of packages and backpacks carried by subway riders. "Random," of course, is a synonym for blind. And we all know what it means when you put blind bureaucrats in charge of homeland security: Grannies and toddlers, prepare to be on heightened grope alert.
Reassuring al Qaeda operatives everywhere, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly pledged that his officers would not engage in "racial profiling." He also emphasized that passengers would be free to "turn around and leave" instead of consenting to a search.
Combined with New York City's inane sanctuary policy, which provides safe haven for illegal aliens, these new security-in-name-only measures prove that political correctness still trumps public safety.
A few weeks ago, I noted the vapidity of the trite phrase "heightened alert." New York's response yesterday underscores the point. It is madness to pretend that no profile exists of possible Islamist bomb plotters. It is reckless to prevent law-enforcement authorities from taking obvious national-security profiling factors (racial, ethnic, religious, nationality, behavioral or otherwise) into account. And it is deadly to refuse to enforce immigration laws in a manner that results in, yes, profiling.
"Look for things that are unusual," Commissioner Kelly implored. "Look at things through the prism of 9/11." Uh-huh. But don't dare note the obvious:
* The 7/7 London terrorist bombers were young Muslim men all but one of them of Pakistani origin.

Char (:
I've been 'profilin everyday of my life... it's called the survival instinct.
Most people do. I know I do, but according to our gubmint, we're not "politically correct". Most of the politically correct folks do not live in the ordinary world.
Refusing to single out individuals of apparent middle eastern descent for questioning makes no more sense than questioning men and women when looking for a rapist.
Is there a generice id/lwd to use for this site? I've never seen an exerpt posted from the post....should just paste the entire article so the rest of us can read it.
Look, even a White Trash Redneck can get this one right!!! :)
Even a blind pig can stumble over a truffle in the forest by sheer luck.
...or as I say when I actually sink two balls in a row while playing pool: "Even a broken clock is right twice a day"
Profiling should have a point: removing threats permanently. We shouldn't be ceeding power to the government just because we're afraid to intern and deport the obvious sources of this civilizational threat. Purge it, and get on with American life.
I'd rather protect myself than lose my freedoms for some artificial security measures that don't address the real problem: immigrants and visitors who hate our country and our way of life, and second generation immigrants or their children who hate us just as well. If we ask for Big Brother, our current crop of weak-kneed (globalist) politicians would be more than happy to oblige!
Every power we give to government takes many times the amount that effort to get back for the people. Think about it. It's us or them. I choose freedom for us.
Agree completely.
Whoa now I want to fight this problem but as a conservative and a libertarian that's something I do not agree with
It looks like the Brits had already surrendered their arms, their privacy, and their ability to truly speak out when this happened. I do NOT want to see us sacrificing liberty for security here. And there's no reason why we can't have both. Round up the threat and ship it out. We know where to look for them: on the rosters of mosques and on the mideast immigration lists.
Benjamin Franklin said as much and I 100% believe in those famous words.
"Round up the threat and ship it out."
There are some liberal apologists that should go with them IMO
One of the four who committed the bombings in London on 7/7 was born in Jamaica. That nut who tried to blow up the airplane with a shoe bomb was a caucasian Brit. The U.S. citizen they locked up in South Carolina that was supposed to be scouting things out for al Qaida is Hispanic. Who all would Malkin like us to profile?
Have you ever seen a picture of Richard Reid or just seen his name in print? He looked muslim as all get-out. Your other two examples were cherry-picked from the negligible number of terrorists that aren't instantly identifiable as middle eastern males. Malkin is spot-on with her editorial. If the police have any reason to suspect someone of any race, they should do what they have to do; but the emphasis clearly needs to be placed on those that fit the profile of about 99% of the terrorists out there.
Well said John :-)
Or, as in the case in London, 75% of the attackers. The terrorists aren't dumb. Muslim fanatics come in all races and countries and looks. Targeting just one group, as you and Malkin suggest, will leave every other group free to strike.
