It has been a long time since so much syrupy nostalgia has been in evidence at the White House. But Tuesday night, when President Bush announced his choice for the next associate justice of the Supreme Court, it was hard not to marvel at the 1950s-style tableau vivant that was John Roberts and his family.
There they were -- John, Jane, Josie and Jack -- standing with the president and before the entire country. The nominee was in a sober suit with the expected white shirt and red tie. His wife and children stood before the cameras, groomed and glossy in pastel hues -- like a trio of Easter eggs, a handful of Jelly Bellies, three little Necco wafers. There was tow-headed Jack -- having freed himself from the controlling grip of his mother -- enjoying a moment in the spotlight dressed in a seersucker suit with short pants and saddle shoes. His sister, Josie, was half-hidden behind her mother's skirt. Her blond pageboy glistened. And she was wearing a yellow dress with a crisp white collar, lace-trimmed anklets and black patent-leather Mary Janes.

Taupe is a neutral color that looks a little more classy than white shoes with pastels.
"That's why women read the style section."
Not this woman.
I choose to believe that taupes are killer hybrid turtles with genetics engineered by Nazi scientists living deep in the Amazon's jungles after World War II.
You say that taupe is a neutral color. That's just what the Germans want us to believe.
The author was trying to be too cute by 1/2 and failed completely.
It's a guilty pleasure for many...I once heard a rather overweight, but witty well-bred young lady do a play-by-play of the mating ritual at a cotillion. She was so funny and nasty she made soda come out of my nose.
This anonymous jobber deserves a prize for unabridged drivel.
Don't fret...durasell is just being his bitchy self. He imagines that it's cute and/or clever; it's neither.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Some of these people (liberal women in particular) just "love" black..perhaps it goes with their hearts.
How dare that man and his pro-life wife have two blonde children!
I mean, really. White, Catholic, blonde! Don't tell me, they have BLUE eyes?
I think that I remember reading about that in "Little Women". Or maybe it was "Jo's Boys". It was (in the 19th century) a respectable opportunity for respectable young women to "display" themselves in some romantic scene(clothed of course)from a painting,or a famous historical scene,or some such.
Oh, you know that mentality, that people who appear to bathe and practice grooming and dress neatly and discreetly, are "inauthentic".
If Prez Bush had picked someone who looked like Mr. Potatohead, many Freeperettes wouldn't be so interested.
What are the "light-up/shoe-buying hoi polloi"? This reference escapes me entirely!
I don't know exactly why this post popped up on my pinglist, given that I am not listed as a ping-ee, but "hoi polloi" is Greek for "the masses." It's a literary expression sort of similar to "the great unwashed masses," except not necessarily 'unwashed.'
Never mind--I'm an idiot. I thought the general Latest Posts section was my New Posts to You section.
Actually, it's considered a neutral color that goes with a lot. Wonder what they would have said if she had worn pink dyed-to-match shoes?
LOL! Not in Little Women they weren't!
LOL! I'm speechless -- but you may have a point!
