An Image A Little Too Carefully Coordinated (Roberts)
The Washington Post ^ | 7/22/05

Posted on 07/21/2005 11:14:08 PM PDT by kingu

It has been a long time since so much syrupy nostalgia has been in evidence at the White House. But Tuesday night, when President Bush announced his choice for the next associate justice of the Supreme Court, it was hard not to marvel at the 1950s-style tableau vivant that was John Roberts and his family.

There they were -- John, Jane, Josie and Jack -- standing with the president and before the entire country. The nominee was in a sober suit with the expected white shirt and red tie. His wife and children stood before the cameras, groomed and glossy in pastel hues -- like a trio of Easter eggs, a handful of Jelly Bellies, three little Necco wafers. There was tow-headed Jack -- having freed himself from the controlling grip of his mother -- enjoying a moment in the spotlight dressed in a seersucker suit with short pants and saddle shoes. His sister, Josie, was half-hidden behind her mother's skirt. Her blond pageboy glistened. And she was wearing a yellow dress with a crisp white collar, lace-trimmed anklets and black patent-leather Mary Janes.

This is just hilarious. WaPo's "style" editorial is oozing with helpless hatred, like they are watching the world change around them and are utterly unable to do anything about it. They're mellllting...

This is totally immature and immaterial. Before you know it, somebody is going to be yelling at Judge Roberts, "I know you are but what am I?"

No, "pumps", or "court shoes" in the English style, are plain high heels. High heels with no embellishments, a closed front/toe, sides, and back/heel, as opposed to sling-backs, or sandals, or slides/mules.

It was written for the style section.

I believe that they're saving that for the confirmation hearings.

There was nothing wrong with his family being with him, and I thought they were all dressed very proper. In fact, it was quite refreshing to see those cute little kids. The losers at the WP are just mad because Bush got to appoint someone for the SCOTUS position. Jealousy is a terrible thing! They're just going to have to deal with it.

It's a personal decision whether he should bring his family or not. Some people don't want their families in the public eye. Once they enter the public eye, even if they are uner 18, they lose some rights to privacy under the law. My feeling is that it makes no difference, either way.

Everybody should send them a comment.

Here is a copy of the one I just sent them

"Re: An Image A Little Too Carefully Coordinated

This is the most immature and immaterial bit of writing I have seen in quite awhile (that is saying A lot!). It is pathetic that your writer attacks the choice of clothes a loving mother puts on her children. This is not at all out of the ordinary for well dressed children going to the WHITE HOUSE on such an important occasion.

Pathetic, just Pathetic. "

Hmm.. Well, you may be right for all I know. The only reason I could even venture a guess is because many, many years ago I had to put in some community service hours at a Good Samaritan thrift store and I had to write "taupe" in the color section of the labels.. =)

I have it on good authority that taupes are actually vicious turtle like creatures with oblong shells, duck-like feet and growths that resemble facious hair. Until recent changes in weather patterns, they inhabited remote sections of the Amazon. However, they have slowly begun migrating north and now we must all watch out for...

THE INVASION OF THE KILLER TAUPES!

" But the Roberts family went too far. ... There was only the feeling that, in the desire to be appropriate and respectful of history,
the children had been costumed in it."

Trashing the children's clothes has got to be a new low, even for the Washington Post.
I'd wager this was written by that venomous Robin Givhan.
Apparently she would have preferred mini dashikis and do rags on the tykes.

Liberals will find anything to attack someone. Hey if you look like a 50s family, you're "square" and "uncool." I suppose they would have attacked Roberts family if they showed up in street clothes wearing flip flops. With the Left, conservatives just can't win - even on matters of style.

Everybody should send them a comment.

Actually, everyone should forward this to their friends and family. Share it with coworkers. Those who are moonbats will giggle over it, the majority will be offended. Maybe this will spark stronger support for Roberts - just deserts for an attack article of the most pathetic kind.

Actually, the author of this piece totally misused and misplaced the date of tableau vivants!

Tableau vivants are set stage pieces, with every person standing stock still and usually at least partially NAKED. The were common place in the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Many times, they were recreations of famous paintings, but not always and were used in the ZIGFIELD FOLLIES and THE FOLLIES BERGERE.

This has to be one of the meanest pieces I've ever seen. The idea that in dressing respectfully -- I'd say beautifully -- for the White House they were doing a marketing campaign...well, it makes my blood boil. Some libs need to get a life.

Lifeless?

I'd say overcome with the history of the moment, while simultaneously preoccupied with the difficult task of keeping a little boy corralled who's been up too late on a special day.

And even if they were marketing - what's wrong with that? Last I heard, its not a crime to present a positive impression to people, never mind the country!

So the author was trying to reduce Roberts and his family to mere stage props. Well, it's not everyday that you get to see a stage prop being elevated to the highest court in the land.

It was in the Style Section. It's supposed to be catty and mean-spirited. That's why women read the style section. It's the female equiv of professional wrestling. And society marriage announcements are the equiv of the sports pages.
