An Image A Little Too Carefully Coordinated (Roberts)
The Washington Post ^ | 7/22/05

It has been a long time since so much syrupy nostalgia has been in evidence at the White House. But Tuesday night, when President Bush announced his choice for the next associate justice of the Supreme Court, it was hard not to marvel at the 1950s-style tableau vivant that was John Roberts and his family.

There they were -- John, Jane, Josie and Jack -- standing with the president and before the entire country. The nominee was in a sober suit with the expected white shirt and red tie. His wife and children stood before the cameras, groomed and glossy in pastel hues -- like a trio of Easter eggs, a handful of Jelly Bellies, three little Necco wafers. There was tow-headed Jack -- having freed himself from the controlling grip of his mother -- enjoying a moment in the spotlight dressed in a seersucker suit with short pants and saddle shoes. His sister, Josie, was half-hidden behind her mother's skirt. Her blond pageboy glistened. And she was wearing a yellow dress with a crisp white collar, lace-trimmed anklets and black patent-leather Mary Janes.

Jeez! It's not like Mrs. Roberts wore white shoes after Labor Day or something.

From the article: "like a trio of Easter eggs, a handful of Jelly Bellies, three little Necco wafers."

Easter..."wafers"? Anyone else detect ever-so-slightly veiled anti-Catholic slurs here? They see a normal Christian family and have to smear them for looking...conventional? How...sad. Would they prefer a couple of mutilated fetuses in jars like the...uh...families of their colleagues at The Whinington Post?

Well the comparison was just stupid - Necco wafers are a dull colored candy, while Jelly Bellies are bright....... ;^)

Geeze.. What is it with these people?

More than likely The Post writer of the article has had a couple of abortions. Automatically snarls at couples with children.

The references to Easter and Christmas in the article are a bit...revealing. Liberals now, apparently, snarl at children at first sight.

My wife, a crossword-puzzling wordlover, actually made the exact same observation to me when I showed her this article this morning. It's the kind of slur that would've slipped right past me.

I will say it was obvious even to someone as obtuse as me that the kids were in their Easter outfits and this article is unnecessarily harsh.

Sounds like child abuse.

Vote him down for the SC!

Is this the best they can come up with?

It's the first time I have ever seen Catholics referred to metaphorically as "wafers" of any kind. So what's next next an article criticizing the kind of cars they drive, their house, and where they vacation???

I'd say overcome with the history of the moment, while simultaneously preoccupied with the difficult task of keeping a little boy corralled who's been up too late on a special day.

That's what I mean. It was silly to make them stand there like statues. I wasn't criticizing her or the kids. Just whoever was using them as a prop. Put 'em in the front row or something.

And did look like old money but I sort of like old money on the supreme court.

"Old Money" means that the one spending it did not earn it. Roberts, on the other hand, prospers due to his intelligence and hard work.

This is in the same category as the snipes at Katherine Harris for her makeup.

They actually try to convince people that handsome or beautiful conservatives are ugly or contemptible.

Admit it ... planting that lady out there, lifeless, with her two kids. That was just creepy.

Wow, was tired when I read this article last night and missed this sentence. What an absolutely despicable comment!

YES!!!!!! Disgusting! I hate these lefties!

As an aside....... that's the way my mother dressed me and my sister when my father got an award at his corporation back in the mid-'50's.

I say bring back the standards!

How's that? You think it's nice to make that woman shut up and stand there like a statue? Not to mention how miserable the kids must've been. I thought it looked "awkward" at best.

By Robin Givhan.

Sheesh, this is the most petty piece of "journalism" I think I have ever seen.

First she acknowledges that the kids couldn't dress themselves, then she ends with this: "There was only the feeling that, in the desire to be appropriate and respectful of history, the children had been costumed in it."

Yes, they were dressed for the occasion, moron.

I think that they are worse than mean. I think that they do not know the basic fashion rules and etiquette that all well bred (properly raised) people know.
