"You're still young, kid. Don't get married. Or at least don't have kids. You may actually get to keep your house and 60% of your gross pay."
Probably nothing to worry about there. Women don't exactly swarm around me. How did you know I was young? Did you look at my personal page?
To: SunnyUsa
Nope, I am still married.

42 years Hurrah! I'm well into the double digits with Mrs. Bustard ...we agreed early on that "divorce" wasn't in our vocabulary. It hasn't always been easy, but it's well worth the effort.

My batting average of 250 would be okay for baseball but not for attorneys. They take your money, screw up, and I finally found a good one after 4 tries. I want to file 3 bar complaints but that's like filing with the fox guarding the hen house.

42 years I have been married . They will separate us when one of us goes in a box.Bravo!! I'll be married 23 years and I feel the same way.

so you are seperated?
Why would you refer to your wife then as "some girl"?

My inlaws have been married 65 years. My parents have been married 55 years. My wife and I have been married 29 years.
Commitment, responsibility, children, love...have not been taken lightly.
Our families have been stable.
Life has been fabulous.

I always thought the divorce rate was overstated. I may be naive, but growing up I never knew anyone who was divorced until I was an adult. All (and I mean ALL) of our close friends who got married around the time we did are still married 23 years later.
Maybe we're too lazy for divorce here in the Heartland?

sorry to hear you picked the wrong man---actually not a man but a cry baby and wimp since 'a man' would shoulder his share and work things out---if all is true that you say, it will be better for you and the youngsters to get rid of him---hope you have a better future than past--(i have been married to the same woman for 55 yrs---(I have found a gem)

So why do married men live longer, while married women have shorter life spans? Marriage can be a good thing for men.
Granted, everybody, male or female, has to make sure the person they're marrying has the same idea about marriage that they do.
That, IMHO, is the biggest problem we have now. People marry on a conditional basis - until they meet somebody richer, better looking, etc. And it's encouraged by our society and tolerated by our churches. I live in Evangelical territory, and most of my Evangelical friends have been married at least twice, several of them three times, and one of them is on her fifth.

I've always noticed that many generally accepted "facts" seem a little questionable. In college, in another class, the professor said something about how high the divorce rate was. I raised my hand and made the comment about what I had learned in the other class. He shook his head, and didn't seem to believe me. No one else in the class did, as far as I know.

Well, that's fine. No secrets here. Oh, I know where Hoffa is buried, but that's all.
To: WIladyconservative
That's my experience. My folks died after 50 years of marriage. My in-laws made the big 5-0 before my mother-in-law died. My sister's been married for 28 years. All of my husbands five siblings have been married for over 20 years, and my hubby and I have been married for 26 years and are still going strong. All my friends have remained married to their first spouse. I had one friend who had a rough time last year, but her husband gave up his bimbo, she forgave him and they have reconciled. I honestly don't have anyone in my personal circle who has divorced yet.
I really suspect the 50% divorce number, unless there are huge patches of America with 99% divorce rates somewhere. I think those who are noncommittal completely avoid marriage.
