The lead article in todays The American Prospect, an online magazine, says that President Bushs selection of Judge John Roberts for a seat on the Supreme Court is evidence of his "Playing the Catholic card.
According to Adele M. Stan, Bush is "betting hes bought himself some insulationany opposition to Roberts, particularly because of his anti-abortion record, will likely be countered with accusations of anti-Catholicism.
She says this is a "timely pitch to "conservative Catholic voters prior to the midterm elections; she urges "liberal Catholics and others to protest Roberts.
Stan goes even further on her blog, AddieStan, by saying "Rome must be smiling at Bushs choice. She asks that readers contact the Democratic Catholics on the Senate Judiciary Committee to reject Roberts.
Catholic League president William Donohue commented as follows:
"We had no idea that John G. Roberts, Jr. was a Roman Catholic until today. But when we learned of his religious affiliation, we wondered how long it would be before his religion would be dragged into the debate.
"We didnt have to wait too long: The American Prospect, never friendly to Catholics, let Adele M. Stan do its bidding. Roberts, she says, was chosen purely for sinister reasons.
"Now lets apply this logic to President Clintons selection of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Steven Breyer for the Supreme Court. Did he do so because he liked Playing the Jewish card? And did he do so because he wanted his critics to be seen as anti-Semites? For good measure, was Israel smiling when Clinton chose Ginsburg and Breyer?
"The fact that Jew baiting did not accompany the nominations of Ginsburg and Breyer shows how this nation has progressed.
"Unfortunately, within 24 hours of Roberts nomination, Catholic baiting has raised its ugly head. And the fact that it is coming from a mainstream liberal source is even more disconcerting. We hope this is not the beginning of an ugly few months.
How many Hispanics are not Catholic?
More than you'd expect!
To complete my thought about Catholics and the Democratic Party: Catholics are generally far less pro-business than Protestants. (Recall the "Protestant Ethic" as giving rise to capitalism.) So educated Catholics gravitate towards the professions or to government employment, and uneducated Catholics (in the old days) to unions. Catholics are less individualistic than Protestants and are more likely to support social "safety net" programs. For all these, and other, reasons, the pro-abortion stance of the Dems has failed to radically alienate a majority of Catholics.
Good.
Well, how many are faithful that are Protestant?
By the 'sector', do you mean Hispanics? And I would guess less than half are practicing. Just like the rest of the "Catholic" population.
Which party in their right mind would ignore their deeply regarded religion?
I don't think Hispanics are a voting 'bloc' as much as some ethnic groups were in the past. So, I don't think religion is as much a part of a political calculation or maybe even a bonus as it used to be. Any good feelings about Roberts' religion and GWB's choice of him are not going rub off on future political candidates.
I don't like Scalia and Thomas because they are Catholic. I like them because they are good justices.
I couldn't venture a guess. Or any wisecracks.
Oh, it is just the beginning. Remember, Mr. Donohue, the barking moonbats are now the mainstream of liberal thought.
And yes, I fully believe the American Prospect would have run an article calling "Playing the Jewish Card" if Bush had nominated a Jewish person instead of Roberts. Much of the moonbat left is openly anti-Semitic.
This is SWEET! Throwing the MSM's "Catholic-fad" back in the dims ugly faces.
LOL!!! Hitery has to be furious 'cuz this takes the edge off her conversion to Catholicism, Hehehe.
The Libs haven't got anything left but hate.
As usual, since it doesn't appear that the Dems can demonize him for anythign he has ruled on, NOW they are going to demonize him because he is Catholic...
Maybe they should get Sheets Byrd up there to scare the Catholic out of him or whatever else the KKK likes to do to Catholics both north and south...
I don't have and good estimate but it's a higher percentage than you might think. I lot of the hispanics from the Phillipines and other south sea islands, and the caribbean islands including Cuba are Methodists. Our missionaries beat the Catholics there I guess.
The differences between Catholic conservatives and Protestant conservatives, politically at least, are lessening at a great rate.
This view might have more validity 30 years ago. It really doesn't now. President Bush has garnered a majority of Catholic votes in 2004. Our Jewish elder brethren are just a few steps behind.
150 years old, and that is still extremely disturbing.
Maybe she should move to Addiestan.
This surprises you? The anti-Catholic bigotry that accompanied the waves of immigrants was amazing! The KKK developed after the Civil War and was not only anti-Black and anti-Jewish but anti-Papist. As late as 1960, JFK still had to sell his Church down the river to be elected. Al Smith never had a chance.
Frank
I knew the Democrats and the Islamists were coordinating anti-Bush policy, but they've taken over Adelemstan!
Here we go. The Vatican controls the W.H. and now they are closer to controling the Supreme Court. You know that conspiracy is beginning to circulate out there.
