BAGHDAD (AFP) - Former Iraqi prime minister Iyad Allawi said he had escaped an attempt on his life during a recent visit to Lebanon.
Members of the Lebanese Shiite movement Amal helped foil the attack, Allawi said at a joint press conference with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, although he did not say how or when it occurred.
"I must thank my brothers from the Amal movement, especially the intelligence services that thwarted the attack. I owe them a lot," said Allawi, who frequently travels to Lebanon.

I remember when he spoke before the senate and most of the dims, including kerry, refused to attend and then insulted him in public.
My God, these animals will stop at nothing. I have prayed for this man's safety since he first came on the screen...he is a very decent and courageous man.
why does he travel to Lebanon?
Some of his relatives are from Lebanon as are alot of his buisness associates. Of course Zarqawi's reach goes through Syria and Lebanon and alot of other countries so it is no suprise that they went after him there.
I sense Syria's hand in this..
That is possible as well, Syria hates Allawi.

Maybe he went for the Lebanese babes.

It's so hard to say. When Assad the elder was alive, I'd have said "No way" simply because the senior Assad was so much smarter than the son. But you can't just say "no way" with the junior Assad (one wonders if the older advisors have been "retired").
If the older Assad was alive and we were in pre-9/11 times, I'd simply say that Hamas was behind the attempt...because from their worldview it would force Syria to back them as we hit back, hard, for that sort of violation.
But today...it could be Al Qaeda...could be Hamas...could be Syria. Frankly, I'm looking for Al Qaeda and Hamas to cement a formal, public union, anyway. The reasons for that will fill a book; I won't bore you here.
Interestingly enough, Al Qaeda and Hamas don't have the resources to mount credible fights in both Lebanon and Iraq. Moreover, if they don't unite, Al Qaeda is going to continue poaching suicide recruits from Hamas...something that Hamas as an independent can't afford.
If they unite, Al Qaeda will either try to bring the old Hamas into Iraq, or pull out of Iraq and go full tilt into Lebanon (or Syria if the conflict widens and we have to smack down Assad).
Most of the armchair strategists are already predicting that Israel is about to occupy Hamas' part of Lebanon, so that will factor in, too. Iraq may be a roach motel sort of honeypot for terrorists today, but an occupied Lebanon (by Jews!) in today's climate will turn the volume up to 11 for the terrorists.
Which suits me just fine, by the way. That they die by Israeli munitions, Iraqi shots, or by American firepower suits me just fine.
You've got that right. Haven't seen you around much lately. Been scarce, or have I just been missing you?

Been scarce. Actually had to do some of that "work" thing (alas, not everything runs itself perfectly forever).
Well, welcome back. :-)
I am wistful for Allawi, especially when he guns down perps at close range, Iraq needs a ball-buster like him at this difficult hour.
More serious, I am glad Allawi is okay. Iraq needs people like him.
I have alot of hope his party will do really well in the December elections, the Shia in the South aren't happy at all with the security situation or the rigid religious rules placed on them. This means Allawi will get a greater percentage of the Shia vote. And, the Sunnis will more then likely be voting this time and they are sure to make alliences with him rather then the religious Shia. He overall is in pretty good shape for December.
One of the biggest mistakes of the war other then disbanding the Iraqi Army was not putting Allawi in power in May of 2003 instead of Bremer, Allawi had only 7 months in office to fix the mistakes of Bremer and others. He went into office with an army with one battalions and when he left office the Iraqi Army had over 100 battalions. The current government sucks, but that is what we were given because Sunnis didn't vote and Shia were voted for who their religious leaders told them to vote for, that will change by the end of the year.
You hit the nail on the head. It was a huge blunder. Bremer was a loser. Allawi is the only man who can rule Iraq.
Ditto that!
