WASHINGTON (AFP) - Lawmakers in the US Senate introduced legislation designed to stem a flood of illegal immigration across America's southern borders.
"This bill strengthens our border enforcement and comprehensively reforms our immigration system, said Republican Senator John Cornyn, one of the authors of the bill, The Comprehensive Enforcement and Immigration Reform Act of 2005.
"We need both stronger enforcement and reasonable reform of our immigration laws," he said.
"In the past, we have not devoted the funds, the resources, or the manpower to enforce our immigration laws or protect our borders," said Cornyn, of the southwestern state of Texas, which shares a long border with Mexico.
The bill's co-sponsor, Republican Jon Kyl of Arizona, said the legislation's goal is "returning the rule of law to the border."
"The single most important aspect of this bill is that it does not reward those who have broken the law, and does not constitute amnesty," said the Republican from Arizona, another southwestern US state bordering Mexico.
"As a nation, we have made both of those mistakes and learned from them. They are the reason we now have an undocumented population as high as 15 million," Kyl said.
Among numerous provisions, the bill would provide funding for 10,000 border patrol agents and 1,250 new customs officers.
It also would devote five billion dollars over five years for high-tech cameras and sensors and infrastructural improvementss at border stations and checkpoints to help stop illegal border crossing
The bill also strengthens US-VISIT entry-exit system to identify aliens who enter the United States illegally and better track those who fail to depart.
The legislation also increases penalties for alien smuggling, document fraud, drug trafficking and gang violence.
The bill also establishes a temporary worker program, creating a new visa category that allows aliens to enter the United States to work for up to two years when there are no available US workers.
Sounds like a flawed (I'm being kind - how about bill written by cretins) bill.
What about the legal Yemenis who are bringing into the US their 10 -15 kids from several wives in Yemen and Somalia? What about the Muslims coming across from Canada?
There are thousands of legal Europeans terrorists who can come here legally right through our airports...does this bill address that? I doubt it.
"Based on the reporting of it, the bill seems ambiguous and open to subjective bureaucrats and judges."
An ambiguous bill for ambiguous aliens.
Seal the borders. Seal them NOW!
Here's another boat floater. Wage pimps like yourself should be in jail, not posting on FR. You contribute zero to the U.S. If America didn't have substandard workers, at a substandard wage working every job from bricklayer to roofer then LEGAL Americans could learn the skills and make a decent wage. I'm sure that means nothing to you, might cut into your profits. Go boof yourself......
Thank you for thinking of me. I will keep your advice in mind when/if I have any comments to post regarding this proposed legislation.
Quisling: a synonym for traitor, someone who collaborates with the invaders of his country.
Who knows what ridders that have been attached to this bill thereby gutting any extra funding that would/could have been used. The congresscritters can say that they had passed a bill providing for extra officers, but each dist. has to get their fair share of the monies first. Thus in the end there will NOT be any money left for the border security & the American people take it in the shorts AGAIN!
That's good. That's great! Thank you! I only said I did not see those provisions in the article posted. Okay?
I didn't make a "negative" post either. What about my other two points? Hmmm?
Why are you pinging me to your chastizing post? I haven't even posted on this thread...geeze...
But I predict it will come back and bite them in the butt big time. We may very well have The Hildabeaste in the White House come 2008 because of this crap.
The American public at large is getting mighty fed up with this. Not a good thing.
I'd suggest you call or write Cornyn's office (don't email, too easily ignored), tell them your story and ask, specifically, what in this bill will solve your problem. The answer should be enlightening.
Bingo
The descriptions of the proposed legislation sounded unusual for the senate; it sounded as if it were based on reason and traditional values ... until I read the last paragraph of the article and then up popped the devil. No surprise.
Not done with you yet, whether you deem to reply or nor. I don't want the illegals, working their butts off, in jail. I want you, C.J. I want you to serve time, I want you to pay a huge fine, I want you to pay the price for screwing America at the expense of the taxpayer. Cultural Jihad this, it's not the illegals that will go down......it's you nimrod.
Zero immigration now for the next 30 years. Nothing less.
Genetics? No, more like the jihadics from fanatical members of TROP pretending to be from Mexico.
No surprises here.
Which is why I've cut off Mehlman from any donations.
