Question: The other Edith was said to have been the runner-up choice when Bush 41 picked Souter. Too bad...you or anyone recall why she didn't get it?

Of course, if the nominee has a "R" after his/her name, they will go ballistic. I think we're pretty safe on that score.

DU'ers will be posting that this tips the balance on the court and whatever self-confessed category they fit in (gay, ethnicity, etc.) the courts will now be coming after them.

I don't think I want anyone that's been tainted by the Senate even if he was a Governor once.

Well stated, good, sober post. But I only wear my panties at night when my wife is feeling kinky.

What's up with the prime time announcement?

Making it a prime time announcement...comparable to a "Now Hear This...not only emphasizes the importance of President Bush's nomination for the SCOTUS, it informs the American people, not just reporters. Besides, why shouldn't the President of the United States have prime air time on the networks instead of their screeching heads misinterpreting what he actually says?

Bush must decide if he wants to overturn Roe or preserve the Republicans as the majority party.

That's the biggest bunch of nonsense I've ever read. The number of people calling themselves pro-life has dramatically increased over the past 10 years and is one of the reasons the Republicans are in the majority. Without a motivated base of social conservatives, the Republican party will be devastated at the ballot box because social conservatives don't like to be lied to.

Futher, overturning Roe merely returns the power to the people. The VAST majority of the people want more restrictions on abortion and, in some states, want abortion for convenience sake outlawed. THAT will motivate the Republican base and in be GOOD for the Republican party, giving it an majority for a generation.

You are being reactionary before there is even a nominee to react to. If you use up all your energy before it is actually needed, that is like running a marathon before you are scheduled to start the actual race. That means you will be of little use when we need you for the big battles ahead. You will have to sit all the other fights out.

I'm a staunch pro lifer and Catholic to boot. Somebody needs to explain to me why I should be tearing my hair out, gnashing my teeth and praying the rosary over this "maybe" nominee by Bush.

I'm with you, seems like there may be some caffeine overdoses around here, let the DU be the ones that go nutz.

Who knows what great inventors, scientists, politicians, educators, religious leaders we've killed in the last 35 years. Society could be entirely transformed for all we know.

And argument I often use with liberals. How often have you heard a liberal say we must save the rainforest because it might contain a cure for cancer or AIDS? The next time you hear one say it, ask them if it is likely that abortion could have killed the scientist that would have found those cures.

There's nobody he can nominate that won't send them over the thread.

But I don't want to be sent over the edge as well.
