"We have an acceptable nomination for the Court".

Acceptable to who? Dingy Harry, Ted "Swimmer" Kennedy, or the folks who elected George Bush, in part to put orginalists on the Court who would *enforce* the Constitution, not "interpret " it.

The Mormons are a minority that are severely misrepresented at the Federal level...

Then elect more Mormons to the Senate and House. The only thing SCOTUS needs to represent is the US Constitution.

One thing to pick a stealth candidate like Roberts who would be confirmed but is a strong conservative it is quite another to go with a female with no record.

Roberts would be a perfect candidate he has no smoking gun against him and legal professionals say he is 90 percent as conservative as Luttig and he would be very confirmable he was just confirmed by the senate.

I don't get the he has to pick a woman or hispanic did you hear Reagan get the credit the last couple of weeks for picking the first woman. No the dems took the credit for O'Connor. This pick can last 30 years who cares about the short term political gains.

If Bush wants someone without a record go for Roberts I wouldn't trust Clement at all. She ruled for the defense in a lot of civil cases sounds like a wishy washy O'Conner clone.

I read when the white house was expecting to replace Renquist for chief justice white house sources said a lot of the women being considered weren't conservative enough to replace Renquist I would bet Clement was on the list as not conservative enough to replace Renquist which makes her wrong for this seat.

Actually, my real guess is Janice Rodgers Brown. I'm confident that President Bush was keeping close tabs on the poll conducted here recently asking Freepers who their first choice was for the first nominee to be selected by the president. Almost 60% for Rodgers-Brown if I remember correctly.

You cannot possibly be serious.

Not really of course... well Anne Coulter would do nicely come to think of it. I'm sticking with my very first prediction that I made on the Hugh Hewitt show a few weeks ago.... Janice Rodgers Brown and when Rehnquist retires Scalia to Chief and Priscilla Owens takes the open associate justice spot.

That's who I have been hoping for from the beginning.
Ted Olson. He's the man.

Acceptable to who?

They were speaking of Santorum's Office so I assume it was acceptable to him which I think would mean it was acceptable to many more people too.

Specter was DA in Philly. He is well-grounded in law.

Who's law? Certainly not the law of the United States.

Any information on Edith Jones or Edith Clement?

Yes and Yes, from what I have seen.

Luttig or Garza are 2 other possibles.

Janice Rogers Brown should get the Chief Justice when that opens and if Scalia and Thomas get passed over.

I guess rating Judges is like rating wives.

Ya pick the one that dances best, cuddles closest and doesn't step on your corns very often. ;-)

Even money that the nominee will be either (in order of decreasing likelihood): Judge Edith Clement, Judge Emilo Garza, Judge Edith Jones, or Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

There weren't many white collar Italians from Scalia's Queens neighborhood in the 40s and 50s.

I know that because I lived on 34th Road in Flushing.
