School Police Officer Shot And Killed In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. -- A school police officer in Newark was killed Monday and another injured in a shootout that also left the suspected gunman wounded, police said.

altSlideshow: Police Officers Shot In Newark
The more seriously wounded officer, Duane Reeves, 35 (pictured), was shot in the head and was declared dead at 5:25 p.m.; the other officer, Akia Scott, 26, was shot in the hand, said Capt. Derek Glenn, spokesman for the Newark Police Department. The alleged gunman was in serious condition, Glenn said.

The shootings happened about 2 p.m. on the sidewalk outside Weequahic High School, said Glenn. Both officers were on duty and in uniform, he said.

Investigators were interviewing Scott to determine the circumstances, Glenn said. Initial reports indicated the shooting may have stemmed from a fight the day before involving two females.

According to Willie Freeman, director for security the Newark School District, the officers approached a car and "there was a confrontation that took place and that's when they exchanged fire."

Newark School Superintendent Marion A. Bolden credited the officers with containing a potentially dangerous situation at the school, which had just let students out after a summer school session.

"Having the officers here is what prevented it from being more tragic than it was," bolden Said.

The shooting occurred about a block from the school's main entrance, near the school's football field and stadium.

Shortly after 5 p.m., a flatbed truck drove away carrying a white security car that had a shattered passenger-side window.

Blue examination gloves, like those worn by emergency medical personnel and forensics investigators, lay on the sidewalk. Shattered glass lay on Chancellor Avenue a few feet away.

The name of the suspect was not immediately released.

Glenn said the two lawmen were trained by the Newark Police Department and had full police powers, but are employed by the school district. According to Freeman, they were assigned to the Weequahic school.

A number of black police officers have been shot, some fatally, in both NYC and NJ coincidentally after the racial profiling was stopped in NJ. From what I recall, a black female E. Orange PO was the first killed then 2 black NYPD detectives and subsequently a few others. During the last couple of yrs. a number of Newark POs were shot due to gang violence and gang contracts on the police.

The schools are getting worse, there are now "resource" officers in many school districts including in very affluent communities, gangs and drugs are everywhere. A lot of these students love MTV and Rap Music and are adopting the "gangsta" lifestyle. I-80 is now a conduit for drugs and guns, no more profiling on NJ highways. So, state troopers are resorting to enforcing tougher crimes like flicking a "cigarette ash" out the window.

Prayers for the police and their families.  It's a tough job especially in toilets like Newark.  The state of NJ is building a huge arena in Newark, closing the Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands.  I really don't think most people in NJ will want to travel to the armpit of NJ to watch ball games and attend the circus.

But how can this be? Wasn't a law passed that banned guns on and near school property?

Oh, yeah, I forgot. Crooks and gansters do not follow the laws we pass.

I wonder how long the rap sheet on the "Suspect" was. How many times had he been through the rotating doors of the system?

Notice how this story avoids telling anything about the Perp?

What kind of reporting is that?

It's not necessary if you know anything about Newark. (sigh). I went to Weequahic High School in the 60's when it was by far the best, and only decent school in Newark because of the remaining Jewish population. It had fairly harmonious race relations at the time and, one year, a state champion basketball team. In the following five to ten years, the neighborhood changed as the remaining Jews moved out to the suburbs.

About 10 years ago I was on an airplane sitting next to a woman who was doing the NY Times Sunday crossword. I like crosswords, so we did some damage to the puzzle and started talking. She was a few years older than I and a bit annoyed with her husband because of a recent divorce. It turned out the husband and I had gone to the same college, and also gone to the same high school (Weequahic), a few years apart. Her gripe was with his commons sense--a few years before, the husband had decided to show the family where he'd gone to high school. Not recognizing the signs of a seriously decayed and dangerous neighborhood, he drove around the school parking lot, where they were held up at gunpoint, with the kids in the car.

Strangely, even with that history and the current events, I think Newark may have hit bottom. Some neighborhoods even seem to be coming back. Maybe its like a forest--after the fire, it looks bad, but the pioneer seedlings soon (or in the case of Newark, eventually) repopulate the barren ground.

I refuse to park my car in a downtown lot to watch a NBA game - because when the game is over your car has been stripped or stolen. Screw the NBA.

Officer down ping. I work off duty at a local high school during the normal school year, Sept-June. The first two months of the year are typically spent weeding out the problem assualtive punks and those who main reason for being at school is breaking into lockers or selling narcotics. Ironically they either come back or land at another school because they are "entitled" to an education. I have never seen anything of this magnitude at school. I won't be surprised if the shooter turns out to be a student.

Given some of the breakdown by Pearls before Swine above, you're probably right.

Worked off duty at an all night Taco place where there's a pretty solid gang presence. It was like being a zoo keeper.

I don't think people understand how destructive Rap/Hip Hop is when it's coupled with the breakdown of the family.

While you may not have seen any thing of this magnitude, I have a feeling we will all be seeing it become more prevalent in the near future

I bet your right about it being a student. It seems like some schools breed violence.
Prayers for the family.

You can say that for so many inner-city, urban schools in northern NJ. Eastside High in Paterson comes to mind, there are so many, the Jews and other European groups kept the standards up until the late 1960's, even after the housing projects went up in the 50's. Once the riots hit, the white flight ensued.

If they are classified as "special education" students; they are, by federal law, entitled to an education until the yr. of their 21st birthday.

what get me, is that once they reach 18, they should be treated as adults committing crimes in a public place. The liberals in the school system rarely press charges.

Funny, my dad used to take me around his old nabe in Newark all the time and we never had any problems. Of course, he grew up in the Ironbound section.

Hi All-

From an article in The Star-Ledger newspaper they reported that one of the gunmen appeared in a new white Chrysler 300M sedan when one of the female students in the original "scrap" called for assistance on her cellular. Gee, do ya' think any drugs helped to finance purchase of this vehicle? These punks think that EVERYTHING needs to go their way.

Find them, lock them up, and toss away the key. Execution won't happen in New Jersey...

We know that most gun laws are worthless but the liberal airheads will use this incident to restrict our rights even more. They aren't smart enough or honest enough to admit that the guns carried by the good guys were the only thing that stopped the violence.

NJ is noted to be very weak with cop killers and very careless where they can escape from jail if need be.

Tom Trantino is laughing at the liberals and the weak criminal justice system in NJ.  One day he's on death row, now he's walking the streets.
