There has been much speculation about what Tom Tancredo said on the now famous interview last Friday on WFLA-AM in Orlando, Fla.
From what I am reading here on FR, much of that speculation is wrong.
Tancredo was, in fact, suggesting that we consider (not implement, just consider implementing) a strategy similar to the strategy that Reagan used to win the Cold War.
Listen for yourself. HERE
If you think Tancredo is a nut case, and you don't want to change your thinking, move along, this clip isn't for you. Just post your thoughts without listening.
He left the GOP well before 2000, he was already a reform candidate by the time of the GOP primary.
Immigration is a media driven issue they think they can use to divide Republicans and talk show hosts use it to drive up ratings because racism attracts the curious. But only a very few people rate it as an important issue. It may play with the Bush-haters but not thoughtful voters.
Its definatly a touchy issue, but its appeal is more then race, its an issue that slices into every group, from soccer moms, to union going folks, it carries appeal to many on the right and left, its one of the few issues that even splits the DUmmies in half.
By 2008, it will be a crucial issue (along with spending, and the WOT, which will get linked with immigration).
Bauer and Keyes did get Bush to harden a bit on a couple of issues, the one thing that sticks out in mind, and its ironic in todays context, and whats going on now, had to do with gays.
Almost everyone conceded that the Bush tax cut plan was at least inspired in part by Forbes and Forbes by debating Bush, helped Bush sharpen his attacks and defences in pushing forward his ideas.....always a good thing.
He has none.
His job here is to discredit Tancredo.
They're so predicatble. I always get a good laugh out of their 'oh so serious' concerns. That's why I threw in that last little sentence in my original post. I was laughing at them before it was even posted.
"There is no strategic value to bombing Mecca even after a devastating attack on the U.S."
See #160.
Fine, but in 2008, he will run, and he will lose, but he will be in the debates.
No canididate can win the nomination by ignoring other candidates during a debate or primary if they start raising issues and asking questions.
Tancredo brings up immigration and another candidate pretends it doesn't exist will lose out to whomever does, and I am a strong beliver that competition brings out the best, Tancredo is not viable for nominee, but he is not ignorable, and he carries just enough guys to be an influence, competition will bring out the best the GOP can offer in 2008, and he will be a part of that process.
Aren't you just a rocket scientist. Leave the politics to the adults. Don't you have an underground bunker to be digging in your backyard?
The funny thing is that they're desperate to paint us as a tiny fringe minority. Hugh Hewitt tried it on his show today but after 3 hours of angry calls and e-mails he was forced to admit that he was wrong. He still doesn't agree but he did admit that we aren't a tiny minority.
The party has two choices. They can pay attention or they can lose.
I don't think anyone sane or in a position of authority has seriously discussed bombing Mecca and other holy sites. America has never done that. It serves no purpose.
But what I was challenging was agincourt1415 statement that " The Strategic Think Tank sites already are speculating that this is the reason it has not happened yet, a back channel threat has already been transmitted. "
Do you have a link to think tanks that have reached such "speculations?" or any evidence of any back channel? I think he just made it up. Tancredo followers do a lot of that.
Thanks for posting this information.
LOL! You are precious!
Of course America has done that. They've always done that. There are whole departments where THAT'S what they do.
Please name the politicians that have helped the cause of secure borders.
I've got a better idea, why don't you take your fringe buddies and get out of the GOP? We don't need a lunatic fringe. In case you didn't notice, we got 61 million votes in '04. we can live without you lunatic fringe folks. You turn cost us more votes than you ever deliver. Run Tancredo as a 3rd party....PLEASE!
Why don't you leave French boy.

I think the other was in National Review a few months back.
But yes, you threaten the things a Muslim Terrorist holds dear, and my question to you, Why would we not make a threat like that?
Nuke attack on America, all bets are off, all options OPEN!
In other words, we are giving them cart blanche to try and nuke us with immunity, if we don't make the threat.
"I doubt also they'd give a rat's ass if a "holy" site was bombed for the same reason. In fact, they'd probably revel in it, wrap themselves in it and proclaim us all the more worthy of death for it."
Exactly, they would build tombstones in the crater where all the 'holy martyrs' fell.
Who do you want to be elected president in 2008?

But America DID almost seize religious property from the Mormons in the late 1800's over the issue of polygamy, and would have taken all the church's property (even though it was blatantly unconstitutional) if the Mormons had not abandoned the practice. Moreover, the government of Illinois, through its refusal to vigorously prosecute the mob that murdered Joseph Smith and his brother, tacitly winked and nodded to the burning of the Mormon temple in Nauvoo. America has a "rich" history of religious persecution prosecution--government sanctioned included.
You don't think we have the authority to take some mosques over the religious practice of jihadist murder? Of course, that doesn't relate to Mecca as it is outside of the U.S., but it would at least protect us from the islamo enemy within.
Tough guy on the internet. Your as dumb as a stump. Go ahead and vote for Tancredo and the loons in the primaries. We'll take your vote in the general election. Just don't tell people you are a republican please. We've worked hard to get where we are without having our own MoveOn crowd bringing us down.
Only to build luxury townhouses that pay more taxes.
I thought George Allen would be a good President. For right now I'm still thrilled about Mr. Bush as my President. I worked hard on his campaign. I think we really can get a permanent majority as long as we don't let the Tancredo fringe turn off people. The Dems are doing just that to their party.
