Dying to Win: The Secret Logic of Suicide Terrorism: | Robert Pape

Good Discussion item. Pape says our troops on the Arabian Peninsula are causing terrorism. He recommends 'off shore balancing'.

We really don't have that many troops on the "Arabian Peninsula unless they are counting Kuwait and Iraq....and if only a handful of troops that we DO have there are causing all the issues, then it is more of an excuse than a cause....

This guy had an article on Patriot in the Gulf War that was questionable. As I read him, he's anti-military through and through. And the notion that we "cause" terrorism has been blasted out of the water by Peter Lance, Gerald Posner, and others who showed that OBL was violently anti-U.S. BEFORE the Gulf War. To the Arab loonies, any American alive ANYWHERE is "in his space." They are just like the commies in that regard.

He makes the point that Suicide bombing has increased. As in Spain and London, the recruits are often Saudi but increasingly local residents.

As for being anti-military, does that mean he wants our troops safe at home? I say that is pro-military.

No, it does not mean that, and troops at home are a very bad sign. It means you are not taking the fight to the enemy.

Ask the Germans in 1945 about "troops at home."

Our troops should always be forward deployed. (BTW, none of the early presidents wanted standing armies IN THE US!)

As for suicide bombings increasing? Good. fewer of 'em. Even the Japanese in WW II started to run out of "volunteers." See Victor Hanson, "Ripples of Battle," his chapter on Okinawa.

He explained that the Bali bombing was to kill Australians. Over 100 were Aussies.

Repeating my comments from the other Thread:

I found Mr. Pape's comment that the "Suicide Bombing Vest" originating with the Tamil Tigers quite interesting. HOWEVER...................

I disagree completely with his ONLY solution to our current problems: The complete withdrawal of Western Military forces from the Middle East.

Has our military been stationed in the Middle East before terrorism to protect oil?

He is being praised (from England) for his 'common sense' now.

Briefings to Dept of Defense, Homeland Security, and 15 members of Congress. He is certainly getting around.

Obviously no innocents need to die. But equally obvious is that many innocents DO die in combat. Do you dispute this?

al-Qaeda's stated strategy is to attack the large western countries to get them out of the Mid-East. Then concentrate on getting Israel once the large protectors are out. Pope needs to read al-Qaeda.
