About 500 faith-hate and race-hate crimes — ranging from arson attacks on mosques to Muslim women being spat at in the street — have been reported in Britain since the London bombings, writes Dipesh Gadher.
According to police sources, about 200 of these incidents are deemed significant enough to have potential repercussions within communities.
They include mosques being set alight in Birkenhead, Merseyside, Telford, Shropshire and Leeds.
“We have definitely seen a spike, but these are not co-ordinated incidents,” said Assistant Chief Constable Rob Beckley, head of the Association of Chief Police Officers’ community tensions team. The authorities normally deal with about 50-60 similar incidents a week.
Beckley said police forces were “busting a gut” to respond to the crimes and were making swift arrests in many cases. However, he remained concerned that “a catalytic incident” could trigger something far more serious, such as a full-blown race riot.
Muslim leaders have called for calm and have unequivocally condemned the London attacks. But last week they were criticised for failing to do enough to confront extremists within their own community.
“We have reached a dangerous crossroads and the direction we choose will prove to be a defining moment in our history,” said Shahid Malik, the Labour MP for Dewsbury, home to one of the bombers.
“The knowledge that the bombers were British Muslims . . . has sent us a signal we can no longer ignore, that there is indeed an ‘enemy within’,” he said. “The battle for the soul of the community has begun.”
Tony Blair has invited Muslim leaders to a “crisis” summit on Tuesday to help him “pull up this evil ideology by its roots”.
Under new laws, preachers such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi — who has condoned child suicide bombers — denied entry into America and other European Union countries would face automatic exclusion from Britain.
Charles Clarke, the home secretary, is reviewing his powers to deport foreigners and impose specific conditions on asylum seekers. A separate consultation is just ending on whether imams coming to Britain should have a professional qualification and understand English.
A counter-terrorism bill due in the autumn will create a new offence of “glorifying or endorsing” terrorism. Two further offences being drawn up by the Home Office will mean extremists who provide or receive terrorist training would face prosecution, as would those committing “acts preparatory to terrorism”, such as fund-raising or providing safe houses.
Right now we have Sami Al-Arian in jail and getting ready to go on trial for his "hate speech" and his funding of terrorists, so I know that there are radicals speaking up here in the US, but
this country is so huge, compared to England, that it doesn't seem like much...but I keep hearing the terrorism "experts" like Steve Emerson on TV warning us to beware of the unknown...
I also know that there has been Wahhabist type teaching materials coming from the Mosques here in the US---which is a sure sign, that another generation or two are being indoctrinated as we speak...
Ok. So profile swarthy muslim looking dudes. The bad guys will just recruit "lily whites" to do the deed and skirt the profile.
I personally think something like that happened in Okla City, but my tinfoil fell off this morning. Anyhow, it's clear to me that the profiling may be a PC concern, but it also seems like a worthless crutch for the police to lean on. If they're going to catch these guys, they should be watching everything that points to a killer, dark or light.

In the most I would agree that the reaction has been characterised by the kind of clarity of thinking and lack of rush to demand random acts of 'revenge'. There will always be some extremists who seek to use the cover of such events to pursue their own agenda, but there's no sign as yet that they are becoming significantly less marginalised as a result.
As an aside, tonight I watched a young Muslim boy making his professional boxing debut in front of a packed and racially diverse crowd in his home town. Entering the ring to the sound of 'Land of Hope and Glory' with a Union Flag stitched with 'London' and a couple of black ribbons and dedicating his fight to the victims of the bombings, I felt at least a little optomistic for the future.

I have been hearing about this for a while, but if we profile Muslims, Arabs, and such, then at least we have a "chance"...and maybe they will lead us to the "clean skins" that they have recruited...
BTW, I agree with you about Okla.City...I have no doubt there was an Islam connection...but of course Pres. Clinton couldn't be bothered with that, anymore than he could be bothered with Flight 800!!!
How dare you attack our Imams! Our Imams are better than your Imams, so there! Seriously though, the 'mad-dog' Imams are the key to crushing this medieval cult. If the world's 'specialists' could identify and, 'er, bring to justice, (I believe that's the correct terminology), these wonderful folks, then that just might eventually dry up the madness. Of course, we would have to, 'er, bring to justice any replacements. Bare in mind, I am suggesting that only those identified as 'mad-dog' types, need to be, 'er, brought to justice.
You may not agree, but my sense of propriety suggests it's not on to spit on women and firebomb private property, even if it is a mosque.

I suspect that, given time, the British people will respond much like the American people did after 9/11. There was much talk of vengeance but little happened here. That is the one thing Bush never got credit for. His standing in the Mosque shortly after the attacks saved a lot of innocent mooslimes. But then our enemies will never give him credit for anything.
THERE IS THE WAR OF COURSE....but little violence against that group of people here.

it took awhile for Irish and Italians immigrants to assimilate in America, but they did. But then they came from a Christian heritage.
There is also another factor that I heard a sociology prof talk about: namely, when immigrants came in past decades they settled in communities of people who had preceeded them from their countries. Those who had been here awhile immediately began to instruct and inform the new arrivals about the correct way to behave here - such as speak English and not throw the slop from the second story window.
Unfortunately, the current problem involves people who are committed to NOT assimilating into their 'new country' but rather believe they have a God-directed mission to CHANGE our country. There is a big difference in these philosophies.
That's a good point. Islam is a relentlessly offensive (as in the opposite of defensive) religion. It is practically the only trait it shares with Christianity.
100 years ago Americans believed their nation was the greatest one on earth. Now we have the radical left to contend with, which believes America is inherently evil and racist, thus new immigrants ought not to assimilate, and to ask them to do so is racist and oppressive.

There is a def ence that can be applied that will render every effort by the Kuffar useless, and serve to keep our Islamic identity intact. This defence is knowledge. The Muslim should arm himself with a correct Aqeedah and an awareness of what it means to be Muslim. Any attack, any attempt to subvert or mislead will then be in vain. If the Muslim knows the true nature of this society and if he can see how it is designed to mislead, then he will not fall into its traps. This ability to distinguish from right and wrong and chose right, comes from a correct Aqeedah.
The strength of the family unit is also a defence. The father is the shepherd of the household and like any other shepherd he should protect his flock from the wolves. In this case the wolves are the Kuffar, and the protection is to pass the knowledge ont o the children and his wives. The children should be provided with a sound Islamic education outside of their schooling. This is imperative if the children are to be strong enough to avoid the many pitfalls they w ill face. They should be taught that the only truth in this world is the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (s.a.w.) and that all else must be judged against these two noble criterion.
Finally there is a solution guaranteed to remove the risks, and that is to remove oneself from amongst the disbelievers.
It is therefore unavoidable that as long as we live here we will, through a process of cultural osmosis, take on some of the characteristics of the Kuffar. The likeness of Islam and Kuffar is like that o f fresh clear spring water and water brought up from the bottom of a suburban sewer. If even a drop of the filthy water enters the clear water, the clarity diminishes. Likewise it only takes a drop of the filth of disbelief to contaminate Islam in the West. If we have it within our means we should therefore consider moving to a Muslim lan d whereby we can at least live amongst our brethren and within an Islamic society free from the contamination of the disbelievers.
