First Page Of New Harry Potter Book Takes Swipe At Bush
Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince | 7/16/05

Posted on 07/15/2005 10:25:17 PM PDT by Williams

Well the new Harry Potter book has arrived and I can report the first page of the first chapter contains an obvious jab at our president. The book begins with the British Prime Minister awaiting a phone call from the "President" of an unnamed distant country, and wondering when the "wretched man" would call.

As a fan of the books and for that matter of Rowling's personal story and success, I'm saddened that liberal madness had to invade this children's classic. The first chapter was otherwise perfectly enjoyable.

I'm not saying anything else in the chapter was intentionally connected to current events, but I had to draw the comparison with what has ended up in British headlines at the same time as the book release. In the book, the Prime Minister is dealing with unexplained events, at least some of which could be terrorist like. Indeed, they are the work of sinister forces. Whereas I'm sure in this book series, ultimate help will come from the wizarding world, in reality Britain needs the support of the leader J.K. Rowling refers to as that "wretched man." How sadly misguided.

When discussing literature there needs to be "accountable talk" which is derived from the text itself. You are reading too much into to very little and deliberately vague information given.

I seem to recall Rowlings giving a number of Harry Potter books to the NY library after September 11th. Otherwise, I've not heard anything of her politics.

If you want to waste your time on pablum meant for 8 year olds, fine.

I read the first 160 pages of the first book and it was so obviously dumbed-down "Rupert" or "Boy's Weekly" re-hashed into book form.

Please don't do anyone the ignorant and stupid response that they are anything like Tolkien or the Narnia series.

Sorry, I am especially aggrieved at HP because it truly is a mediocrity.

About all you can say, is that there is a sickness in the land. Sadly, it is catching.

And not all Presidents of the United States are GWB. There were others, and some were wretched.

Well, then why the big type and short sentences? Isn't she a liberal? Use smaller type and longer sentences, save a couple of trees. :D Again, i'll wait for the movie.

Oh, I don't know. If Chancellor Palpatine and a martian tripod appear within the first chapter, I'll suspect some anti-republican bias.

_____________
Judging a (now) six book series based on the first 180 pages is much like judging a 7 course meal after sampling the soup and crackers. I imagine that folks who have taken the trouble to actually read Tolkien, Lewis, and Rowling may perhaps make such comparative pronouncements with greater authority.

You might well be right in your assessment, but I cannot fathom how you would know you were.

LOL - oh, those evil right-wing Muggles.

I've always thought Voldemort was kind of like Bill Clinton...

No, wait...actually more like Hillary.

(I advance ordered my copy so I should have it in about ten days!)

First Page Of New Harry Potter Book Takes Swipe At Bush

This kind of hysterical defensiveness just makes conservatives, and FreeRepublic, look bad.

Taking a vague reference to a "president", in a novel -- where leaders are often made up out of thin air with personalities tailored to fit the needs of the plot -- and then using it as an excuse to run screaming to your computer to whine about an imagined attack on a particular American President, is just utterly ridiculous.

There are more than enough *real* examples of over-the-top slams on America or President bush. But getting bent out of shape over something this tenuous, and then claiming that it's a clear and intentional slur on a *specific* person, gives people the impression that if conservatives can fly into a tizzy over such a tiny, ambiguous thing, well, then maybe the rest of their concerns are equally baseless...

Come on, folks, let's pick our battles more wisely.
