Well the new Harry Potter book has arrived and I can report the first page of the first chapter contains an obvious jab at our president. The book begins with the British Prime Minister awaiting a phone call from the "President" of an unnamed distant country, and wondering when the "wretched man" would call.
As a fan of the books and for that matter of Rowling's personal story and success, I'm saddened that liberal madness had to invade this children's classic. The first chapter was otherwise perfectly enjoyable.
I'm not saying anything else in the chapter was intentionally connected to current events, but I had to draw the comparison with what has ended up in British headlines at the same time as the book release. In the book, the Prime Minister is dealing with unexplained events, at least some of which could be terrorist like. Indeed, they are the work of sinister forces. Whereas I'm sure in this book series, ultimate help will come from the wizarding world, in reality Britain needs the support of the leader J.K. Rowling refers to as that "wretched man." How sadly misguided.
I find the Harry Potter books very entertaining, and spend quite a bit of time discussing the lessons embedded in it.
Although Mad Mammoth and editor-surveyor and I do not see eye-to-eye on this, I find very clear moral lessons sprinkled throughout the book. I don't think they appreciate that the battle of good and evil on this plain is fought by the available troops, humans, who the Bible says are all born in sin.
There are evil witches as there are evil men, and there are witches who are true, and just, and good as there are men who are are true, and just, and good.
Neither the men nor the witches are 'good enough' for the tastes of some.
IMHO, it is a Sacred Duty to fight evil at every level, even if one is neither perfect nor saved.
If you get a chance grab a copy of John Granger's The Hidden Key to Harry Potter, I think you will find his treatment of the Christian underpinnings of Rowling's work interesting.
(BTW, has anyone mentioned that the witches have school vacations for Christmas and Easter. Heck, our school district doesn't even do that!)
I've been condemned to hell so many times on FR, once more can't hurt. :-)
Once should suffice...
Rom 3:10 "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one"
If one is not righteous, can one be good?
If I go, I expect to see a lot of familiar faces from here!
BTW, I'm more into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, funny stuff.
Use your 'gift.'
I'm getting all the humor I need here!
Maybe I'll rent "Bell Book and Candle", Jimmy Stewart was a noted satanist.
India does have a President; it's just not the highest office.
Good, yes. Perfect, no.
I strive to be fair, decent, honest, etc.
Like everyone else, I fail on a regular basis...
Many of these well-known people are the antithesis of their P.R.
The recurring thread in all of them, however, is the same old lie: the world revolves around and by and for men, and not around and by and for God.
Yeah. I know people who think clinton is a god. *sigh*
Jimmy Stewart was a Presbyterian.
Kim Novak, on the other hand, believes animals have souls.
That was important and it had to be said.
Didja need to shout?
Are you sure there's a difference? Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God.
will be remembered
Thanks for the news from the future. Now, can I borrow your time machine?
I think the definition has shifted over the centuries. The Book uses 'good' to mean what we would now call 'perfect'. Now days, good means better than average...
A little off topic, but the photo of that Constellation on your FR page reminded me of my late Uncle who used to work for Pan Am, and he was well acquainted with those Connies, said they were the only plane that thrilled him and chilled him all at the same time.
No, you are experienceing history pal. This isn't a test, this is the Real Deal and history is unfolding daily in front of your eyes. You will be long gone and these years will be long remebered. Now, go play in your sandbox.
