Well the new Harry Potter book has arrived and I can report the first page of the first chapter contains an obvious jab at our president. The book begins with the British Prime Minister awaiting a phone call from the "President" of an unnamed distant country, and wondering when the "wretched man" would call.
As a fan of the books and for that matter of Rowling's personal story and success, I'm saddened that liberal madness had to invade this children's classic. The first chapter was otherwise perfectly enjoyable.
I'm not saying anything else in the chapter was intentionally connected to current events, but I had to draw the comparison with what has ended up in British headlines at the same time as the book release. In the book, the Prime Minister is dealing with unexplained events, at least some of which could be terrorist like. Indeed, they are the work of sinister forces. Whereas I'm sure in this book series, ultimate help will come from the wizarding world, in reality Britain needs the support of the leader J.K. Rowling refers to as that "wretched man." How sadly misguided.
I dunno..."wretched" may not cut it.
You did not give any details that would lead me to your conclusion.
My kids will have the book this weekend. I'll read the page myself and decide.
Based on what you have provided, your conclusion is not supported.
Could be a call from PRes. Chirac?
From page 269:
Besides, after the rash of crime-scene investigator shows on TV, half the TV watcher in the country knew about DNA. Hell, even George Bush would probably know about it.
If all you have to do is to read in imagined insults in children's books then you really need to get a life.
Oops, messed up that quote - watcher = watchers - my apologies.
The Harry Potter books take place in an alternate universe where John Kerry won... so she's right on the money.
Bush-bashing aside, Pope Benedict was absolutely right about these Harry Potter books, they are poison to the minds of our young, they encourage sorcery, witchcraft, every sort of demonically-inspired practice, and they subtly seek to divert the focus away from God Almighty, who clearly condemns the practice of the occult arts, and places that focus upon the satanic point of view, which is to "do as thou wilt" and seeks to make every person a little god all their own, answerable to no one but themselves.
J.K. Rowling either knowingly, or unwittingly serves the purposes of the Devil himself.
My bet is that there are quite a few.
This thread is pitiful. Do you people get any joy out of life? Is everything viewed through political filters?
It's a book, it's fun. Lots of things are biased or mediocre. Why is that so offensive to you? Lighten up.
Maybe the first page of Harry Potter book, along with all subsequent pages, should be used to wipe!
(1) I don't think Tony Blair would call George W. Bush a "wretched man".
(2) If all your time and plans are being held up by another person, than that person will be "wretched" no matter how much you love him/her.
(3) No proof that she's referring to President Bush. India has a president, the timeline of HP puts the book in year 1996, and so forth.
Even assuming that you are indeed correct, you have to remember the salient point that even the vast majority of British conservatives hate Bush's guts. Britian is just that much more liberal, it's just an European thing and they will reap what they sow with their socialist policies in not too long. They'll all be living off IMF funds in a couple of decades.
Right around the corner at the National Gallery.
Of course, it IS 1874 . . . . < g >
But maybe these guys are ALL tourists?
"Lighten up."
You absolutely took the words out of my mouth.
And yet you don't hear about any uptick in kids trying to hex their teachers or holding seances. Go figure.
You can tell the real fans on this thread from the knee-jerk reactionaries.
Not only are we culturally close, geographically we're just "across the pond"...
No they don't - you're thinking of the French
The Channel is wider than the Atlantic
A. It's a book, a work of fiction, entertainment, of no real consequence.
B. So what, everyone has an opinion
C. It's a book, a work of fiction, entertainment, of no real consequence.
