NY Times Statement on Judith Miller
The Forward ^ | Friday, Kuly 15, 2005 | Catherine Mathis

Posted on 07/15/2005 11:17:43 AM PDT by kristinn

"Ms. Miller learned about Valerie Plame from a confidential source or sources whose identity she continues to protect to this day. If the suggestion is that she is covering up for herself or some fictitious source, that is preposterous. Given that she is suffering in jail, it is also mean-spirited."

I don't see how she can be protecting herself - because then she would be entitled to 5th amendment protection. she cannot be forced to out herself. It must be someone else.

Not at all. If she were called to testify before the grand jury and invoked the Fifth Amendment on the stand, this would be a clear indication that she was, in fact, the "source" in question.

This would be a colossal embarrassment to herself, would immediately end her career as a "journalist," and would end up causing the whole Rove angle of this story to unravel. I speculated yesterday that she may very well have figured that she'd get far more career mileage and positive media exposure by going to jail to cover for a non-existent source than by getting on the stand and invoking her Fifth Amendment rights.

They forgot:

If the suggestion is that she is covering up for a Republican in the White House, that is equally preposterous.

""source or sources""

Just me, but I would enjoy some hypothetical marital fallout between wife and hubby whether hubby "earned" his trip without wife's intervention or not. Might bruise hubby's ego.

It's Friday, the Dems are in a meltdown over the fact that Rove learned the identity from Novak. Their logic in their accusations is nothing short of preposterous.

I get the feeling that Plame and Miller name-dropped Plame's name as a CIA agent to their cocktail circuit, as a means to create some semblance of importance to her role amongst their friends. I can hear it now, "I talked with a CIA operative tonight. She was a covert agent!"

After listening to Cliff May just now on the Fox Channel I'm more convinced than ever that the TRUE leaker is Wilson himself....

Here is the sequence of events:

Novak printed that Wilson's wife worked at the CIA. He did not name her, nor did he say in what capacity. He states that no one told him that she was undercover and he wouldn't have printed this had he known she was.

Novak told Rove about Plame.

Two days after Novak's article David Corn wrote an article in the Nation with all the inside information -- i.e. her name, her job, etc...

How did Corn get the info? He's a friend of Wilson's... connect the dots....he knew too much not to have received it from the horses' mouth....

There is a lot of similar dots to Judith Miller.

I think The Grand Jury needs to speak to David Corn and make him spill the beans or join Judith in jail.

The Times is actually correct, because Miller is protecting THEM, and not herself. She is toast anyway, since she cant figure out how best to lie to the Grand Jury.

She is being paid to protect her employer.

Mr. Wilson, yes!!!!!! All dots lead back to Wilson as the leaker who wanted to embarass the administration.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but Miller is not a government employee so under the law, revealing Palm's name would not be a crime for her. She has no need to take the 5th. She is only in jail for refusing to verify the source of her information, (and the prosecutor says he already knows who it was) and all of the known subjects within the administration have lifted their confidentially agreements with her so she has no reason to remain quite to protect them.

A logical person could speculate that Miller's source was "outside" the administration, and the biggest mouth among those parties seems to be none other than Joe Wilson himself.

Maybe it's time to deman that Joe Wilson release all the reporters he spoke to from their confidentiality agreements.

Wilson & Plame cannot do that - their entire concocted fiasco requires Miller maintaining their confidentiality.

The 5th Amendment protections against self-incrimination don't apply to Grand Jury testimony.

But what I cant figure out is why this reporter would sit in jail to cover for this these people.

We already saw the big picture... Only the MSM/DNC still dreams of another pie-in-the-sky ending of this story :)

Rove is the only topic on DU. What will they do?

Fall sprawling to the floor, drool and make weird noises, just like they did after the election.

Because - just like the fake memos brought forth by Dan Rather - the DemoncRATs depend on the media to concoct these conspiracies and maintain their confidentiality in complicty; it's the way it's always worked with these folks only now the stakes are higher because the NYT's reporter got caught in the trap of their own making! ROFLMAO!

I understand that, but she would not be in jail now, and that would leave the burden on the prosecutor to be able produce other evidence to indict her. the media would just bury the "she took the 5th, it must be her" story (it would have to come from a grand jury leak) as they do with all the rest - they would just demonize Fitzergerald as a "rogue" prosecutor, etc. we all know the drill.
