Jon Carroll: Hell-Razers Of San Francisco!
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 7/15/5 | Jon Carroll

I love these people, but they drive me crazy. I had a girlfriend like that once; I think we've all had girlfriends like that once. Aren't all girlfriends like that?

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors -- well-meaning folks, but they make me nuts. Just this week, they rejected a plan to bring the battleship Iowa to San Francisco and turn it into a tourist attraction and museum. Why? Cecilia M. Vega of this very newspaper summed up the reasons given for the decision: "the widespread opposition to the war in Iraq, the unequal treatment of gay and lesbian enlisted men and women, and the city's reputation as a home of the peace movement."

San Francisco doesn't deserve to make money off of patriots.

SF became the queer capital because that's where the US Navy dropped off all the queers that were separated from service.

The Board of Supervisors in San Francisco have long been hard-wired for stupidity. I lived and worked there in the mid-sixties.

Not long prior to that, the Supervisors had been in the habit of shutting down and tearing up the cable cars, line by line. There was a popular uprising, and the citizens of San Francisco wrote the cable cars into the City Charter, so the Supervisors could not mess with them any more.

Imagine San Francisco without its cable cars. That is a measure of the short-sighted stupidity of its Supervisors.

San Francisco became the Queer Capital because a) queers like to live together; b) SF is a relatively small and attractive city with a limited stock of real estate; c) homosexuals have more spare money to buy expensive real estate, because they typically are two earners with no children to bring up.

Good thing they have no children to 'rear'!

I read in the SF Chronicle that Stockton is making a serious bid for the USS Iowa. I believe Stockton is in a red county. So hopefully CA. will get the ship.

It would be a sight and a half to see the Iowa heading through the Delta up to Stockton. Regular cargo ships heading up the channel make Delta houseboaters feel puny, imagine what a battleship would look like!
