I love these people, but they drive me crazy. I had a girlfriend like that once; I think we've all had girlfriends like that once. Aren't all girlfriends like that?
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors -- well-meaning folks, but they make me nuts. Just this week, they rejected a plan to bring the battleship Iowa to San Francisco and turn it into a tourist attraction and museum. Why? Cecilia M. SF became the queer capital because that's where the US Navy dropped off all the queers that were separated from service.
From seamen to semen in one generation....
Not long prior to that, the Supervisors had been in the habit of shutting down and tearing up the cable cars, line by line. There was a popular uprising, and the citizens of San Francisco wrote the cable cars into the City Charter, so the Supervisors could not mess with them any more.

San Francisco became the Queer Capital because a) queers like to live together; b) SF is a relatively small and attractive city with a limited stock of real estate; c) homosexuals have more spare money to buy expensive real estate, because they typically are two earners with no children to bring up.

That's what rumor says. I read this tripe in a fiction, too.
I read in the SF Chronicle that Stockton is making a serious bid for the USS Iowa. I believe Stockton is in a red county. So hopefully CA. will get the ship.
