Lake Worth -- Men cluster along Lake Avenue in the early morning hours, waiting idly for pickup-truck drivers to pull over with promises of work.
"We're trying to make an effort to help these guys," Mayor Marc Drautz said. "There's a solution that will work for everybody."
While the gathering of day laborers isn't new, the issue struck a fever pitch early this year when police circulated fliers saying employers who hire undocumented immigrants would be fined. The controversial move was designed to prevent pickup trucks from stopping in the middle of the street.

Sometimes I like to drive my pickup into the Home Depot parking lot, just to feel like an arriving celebrity.

A laborer negotiates the days wage with a potential employer
Leave it to government to attempt to regulate illegality.
Gee, howzabout jailing the employers. Make it unprofitable to hire them.

Hmmm, how about this...treat these "employers" as johns. Photo, fine, pic in newspaper, loss of business license and top it off by taking their vehicles.

Sounds like johns who stop to pick up prostitutes.
I think everyone will agree that the illegal aliens are, for the most part, poor and under educated. The ability to use a circular saw or swing a hammer does not make one a craftsman.
I built a fence for a friend. It was about a 25' section between the house and garage, with a gate. She could have got it done faster and cheaper with a gang of "day laborers", but instead, she has a beautiful fence that will far outlast anything built by a sleazy contractor that can't even keep a crew on staff.
Folks, before you let an unskilled crew do any work for you, please learn the difference between price and value.
Yeah, I've seen some of the "quality" (and I use the term loosely) work done by day laborers.
The homeowner dumb enough to hire day laborers should also carry extra liability insurance.
Your insanely expensive new home was probably put together by illegals who barely know what a hammer is. Let's just say that you won't have to worry about passing it on to your grandchildren. But the contractors love charging you for craftsmen, when you're getting day laborers. On Lou Dobbs's show the other night, he said a huge percentage of the phony Social Security numbers turned in to the feds are from construction, agriculture, meat packing and landscaping businesses but are never followed up. The employers and the federal government are colluding to break our immigration laws.
That has been painfully obvious (at least here in California) for years now. It's disgusting.
I had a neighbor who used to be a painting contractor. It got to the point where if he wanted to remain competitive he would have had to hire illegals. He said to hell with it all, retired and moved out of L.A.
Probably true. They bottom out the wages in any field they are hired in. In his book "Mexifornia" Victor Davis Hanson explains the effect that hiring illegals has on the economy.

The rate of wage, skill, and labor degradation and the negative impact they have and will have on the American economy is INCALCULABLE - so huge is it impossible to comprehend.
The L.A. illegal alien's impact on the local job market has moved out of L.A. - out of the burbs - out of California - all the way to Canada.
