WASHINGTON For more than a decade, gay rights advocates have grumbled about a federal policy that forbids blood donation by men who have had sex with men.
They say that the policy, originally intended to keep HIV-positive blood from entering the nation's blood supply, implies gay men are inherently ill and that it prevents healthy people from donating.
Occasional protests and talks with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees blood banks, have brought no change.
Now, some college students have taken up the cause, and they're taking a new tack. Instead of pressuring the FDA directly, they are going after the American Red Cross the largest and highest-profile blood collector in the country.

I think they are being pretty selfish.
Maybe not. Maybe Politically Correct zealots see themselves as martyrs for the holy cause. Overthrowing taboos even at the expense of their own death is like Islamists blowing themselves up for Allah.
You want to understand them better? Just imagine:
Imagine (Writen by: John Lennon © Bag productions inc) Imagine there's no heaven, It's easy if you try, No hell below us, Above us only sky, Imagine all the people living for today... Imagine there's no countries, It isnt hard to do, Nothing to kill or die for, No religion too, Imagine all the people living life in peace... Imagine no possesions, I wonder if you can, No need for greed or hunger, A brotherhood of man, Imagine all the people Sharing all the world... You may say Im a dreamer, but Im not the only one, I hope some day you'll join us, And the world will live as one.
Yea that commie pinko song.
They'd have to be more than just abstinent -- they'd have to be virgin with regards to other men. The question at my blood bank is along the lines of "Have you ever had sex with another man". I just can't recall if there's a "since 1980" part to it. But even if there was, for a gay man under 40, it would pretty much require being a virgin.
There's something just sad about people being so selfish as to put their "rights" over the lives of other people. Especially when it's the "right" to give blood.
What a QUEER thing to do...
Maybe I read the article wrong but I thought it said that those that donated blood received so many, I think, 4 hours of elective credit.
Several freepers didn't read the complete article or I read it wrong.
Which is it?
It's comp time and not elective credit hours,
The reason is that the Gays are not being treated fairly.
I am a regular blood donor. I love the "homophobic" atmosphere at Red Cross blood donation centers, where people like me can get away with at least mildly "politically incorrect" statements.
Now they want to take even that away from me. And, more importantly, they want "gay civil rights" at all costs, even if the blood supply becomes unsafe!!! This is yet another example of what underminers gaysbian activist are!!!!
You got me there...I should have said "both"...my humblest apologies...(btw, I think it's wonderful...may you only have blessings and joy from your kids).
I was just joshing you. We get that quote from Groucho a lot, and it strikes me as very one-sided.
Thanks for the good wishes. It's loud and crowded here, but they should all be good conservatives in the end. My oldest thinks she'll be the next Ann Coulter :-).
Now, some college students have taken up the cause, and they're taking a new tack.
Line them up and give them some blood from homersexuals.
"I am a regular blood donor."
I give blood on monday and maybe I will leave a copy of this in the waiting room........
If these students (the straight ones, anyway) would just shut up about "gays" and give blood, they would be doing something both useful and life-affirming!!!!
Why should a high risk group WANT to donate blood?
Easier way to spread death?
your guess is as good as mine.
a legitimately abstinent gay man
What are the chances of that?
