No, not 60 pounds.

If you don't have enough fissionable material for a supercritical mass, then you get no "boom." A mere "critical mass" won't explode (just radiate). So unlike most things in life, nuclear physics can't just scale down atomic explosions by using less fisionable material...below a certain point (although smaller explosions can be made with larger amounts of fissionable material, if desired).

Uranium is a very fissionable isotope.  Unlike Plutonium, Uranium can be used in gun-type atomic bombs.  The American Richard Feynman was responsible for correctly calculating the amount of uranium needed to achieve critical mass (his enemy opponent in Germany, Heisenberg, got this math wrong - destroying Nazi efforts to build their Bomb). Critical mass is the amount of uranium needed to start a *self-sustaining* chain reaction. However, if you have a certain amount more than the required mass to start the reaction, a supercritical mass, the reaction would take place faster and grow exponentially (i.e. "explode"). Feynman calculated about 50 kilograms (110 lb.) of pure Uranium would be required. However, the Uranium obtained was seldom pure, so a larger amount would be needed. Robert Oppenheimer said that the required supercritical mass would be about 100 kilograms (220 lb.) of available, highly processed Uranium.

I don't know if he is right or wrong. There are nearly 300 million people in this country, so to think that 5000 Islamist enemies of the USA are in my country wouldn't surprise me. Count the jihadists on our college campuses, especially in California, New York and Arizona, and in heartland states as well. Count the thousands who visit their relatives in Detroit (1/2 million Muslims live there) and Newark. Divide 5000 Islamists by the 48 continental states, and that is 100 per state. PUt those 5000 in the 50 largest cities in our country - 100 per city. Not very hard to imagine at all. We are fools to believe that infiltration has not occurred during the past 10 years or so. We are at war, and too many of my fellow citizens refuse to believe it.

At best, they scored only 3 out of four objectives, worst case I say they scored only 2 out of 4 since they muffed their primary objective when plane #3 opted for the Pentagon. I also say they scored below par in contrast to what the same number of *us* could do (on the basis of determination, ingenuity and competance).

If memory serves me right, there was a story several years ago that under the old Soviet Regieme had placed several "brief case" nukes around our country to be set off when the invasion came. these were the size of "pot belly" stoves and need 4 people to set off. They will fit into the bed of a full sized pick up truck. They were placed in areas if stragic imporantce like dams,nuke plants, large chemical plants, oil production faclities ect... We need to look into these areas on our own to find them. There are lots of deserted area near these faclities folks, and WE need to check them out for our selves. Ourselves & our famlies & Country need us to do this!

There are four, well, five now, such areas near this town, but they are so spread out that one of these pot-belly stoves would not actually effectively take one out. If it is Terrorism, though, it could be done and the casualties might run into the thousands. I have looked around and have found no such devices although there is an old Linotype sitting out in an open field; got to wonder about that.

Even less, I would say. There were credible reports of "dress rehearsals" that did not overlap with the 19 known hijackers, and plausible reports of other hijack teams on 9/11 that did not get off the ground or backed out of their missions.

Which brings up another point: Why 9/11? Why not 8/17? 6/3? The answer is, of course, that we can't know the logistics behind these attacks. Similarly, saying a nuke would already have been used if they had one is meaningless.
