Suspected London bomb maker sought
Newsday ^ | July 14, 2005 | BY KNUT ROYCE AND JOHN RILEY

British police and intelligence officials have launched a nationwide manhunt for a man identified as a likely bomb maker in last week's London attacks, who was seen on a security tape with the four suspected bombers, according to a U.S. official.

"They know who No. 5 is," said the official, who has access to substantial intelligence flowing from the bomb investigation but asked to not be identified.

The man was pictured on a closed-circuit security tape with the four bombers just before they entered London's Underground on July 7 with backpacks the police believe contained bombs. He is British and dark-skinned, apparently of Caribbean descent, the official said.

The bombers, who police believe died in apparent suicide attacks, have been identified as Britons of Pakistani ancestry. The official said the fifth man was involved in the assembly of the bombs, but British authorities do not believe he was the mastermind of the plot.

A video camera in King's Cross Station in North London captured the five men huddling together at about 8:30 on the morning of the bombings. Then, said the official, "The four goons [suicide bombers] went their way, and No. 5 went his."

I've got a feeling this may the guy with a cell phone with four different numbers programmed on speed dial on his cell phone.

I suspect that they are Lying to these young people and getting them to "Deliver these bomb packages and when the time is right they just explode the bombs and kill the carriers along with everyone else. that way the bomb carrier is calm and unsuspecting also?

remember that the World trade towers had Pilots like Attah who knew what was going to happen and then they learned that some of the "GoonS" in the back of the Plane didn't know that that was their last day on Earth.

"....four suspected bombers..

It was hilarious listening to Laura Ingraham this morning talking about how the British WILL NOT call these guys TERRORISTS. They are always referred to as THE BOMBERS..

She said when she hears the word Bombers she always thinks of WWII Bombers, Navy Bombers, etc.

They all have one thing in common.....
We all know what it is.

It is good to know the details of the crime, but does it
make any of the perps less guilty or sympathetic if they
didn't know they'd be blown up along with the infidels?

"...there remains significant speculation in the UK that those 'suicide' bombers didn't know of their appointment with the reaper, after all, suicide bombers rarely need timing devices."

If I was hell bent on accomplishing my mission I would have a timer on the bomb. If it was just up to me pushing the button I may chicken out.

The cell phone can start a 5 minute timer.

Hey, public info is public.

No need to be concerned that you are propagating the story because those who would have gained from it will have already been aware of it.

On the other hand, those 18 year old "moderate" muslims who are being duped into carrying a backpack full of explosives through the BART tunnel to deliver it to the base of the TransAmerica tower might just start to wonder if the guy that sent them off is really thinking about their futures.

Oh yea, the BART tunnel is safe because our guys caught the scum on their return trip from Pakistan.

I sure hope the Homeland Security guys are scanning the passport files and flagging anyone who has gone into Pakistan, Afghanistan, or any of the other countries that allow terrorists to proliferate.

Makes sense, yes.

Witnesses reported that the guy in the bus looked anxious/nervous, and was repeatedly looking into his pack.

I agree that they thought they were merely mules... delivering the bombs someplace to be detonated later/remotely.

I would imagine the alarm clock feature still works underground... cell phone clocks don't get out of sync when they are out of service areas, and the cell's alarm clock only needs to talk to itself, not the cell network.

Yes, I remember. They thought they were just going to do a "regular" hijacking, not a homasue hijacking.

("Homasue" = my trademarked term for homicide + suicide... due to the ongoing debate about whether to call these terrorists "homicide bombers" or "suicide bombers.")

none had been particularly religous or observant

Not quite. From the TimesOnline:

Shehzad never expressed an interest in politics but was a devout Muslim. Saj, a friend bearing an Arabic-script tattoo on his arm, said Shehzad “was a quiet lad, religious. He used to go to every mosque in Beeston and there are loads of mosques around here.”

>>>snip<<<

Khan moved to a council house in Lees Holm, Thornhill, Dewsbury, six months ago and became a liaison officer in another local school. His wife, Hasini Patel, is said to have held anti-Taleban, pro-women views at odds with her husband’s version of Islam.

>>>snip<<<

Religion inspired his (Hasib Hussain's) change of heart. He made the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca as well as visiting Pakistan. Police will be trying to discover whether Hussain, who blew himself to pieces along with 12 passengers on the No 30 bus in Tavistock Square, adopted his radical views at home or abroad.

I read a few weeks ago that suicide bombers in Iraq aren't quite the "volunteers" they appear to be. The masterminds are sending them on seemingly innocent errands to certain places and blowing up the bombs in their cars remotely.

Could be the same thing here. The timers could just be fail-safes in case nerves got the better of the bombers, or they could have been the primary detonator and the bombers thought they were just going to drop the backpacks off somewhere and get away alive.

Yah, Yewbetcha...

They are calling this suicide bombings now, and I guess that it looks that way, but I am with the other group of FReepers who think the bombers were useful fools used as mules who had no idea that they were about to be blown to bits.

I think, as do many others, that they were told that their job was to plant the bombs and get away, but their good buddy the "mastermind" had other ideas.

Bin Laden, in that famous tape recovered from Afghanistan, boasted that most of the participants in the 9-11 atrocity had no idea that they were about to become sacrifices to the greater glory of Islime.
