Los Angeles -- A toddler who was at times held by her father as a shield during an hours-long gunbattle with police died of a single gunshot wound fired by a rifle from a police officer, authorities told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

I repeat my point about the police needing carbines.
Good luck keeping this on here since it was pulled before.
And I repeat, this is not fair and I wish the press would leave this alone.
That poor person who fired the bullet will suffer tremendously not because of his own fault. It could be the "dad" adjusted the baby, could be the wind carried the bullet, could be the baby moved, could be any number of reasons. It's still the dad's fault but this poor cop will suffer irreparable mental damage not only from himself but from the stupid MSM. I hate this!
From the article:
"...a single gunshot wound fired by a rifle"
The kid was killed by a rifle shot, not a pistol shot.
Maybe the cop who fired the fatal shot will come to see it that way after a few (or many) years of therapy.
The shooting may have been justified, but I doubt he will not have an easy time getting over what happened.
This would be the kind of grief that comes out sideways.
Why? Do you think a carbine round won't kill a toddler. I imagine the rifle round may have come from a sniper's rifle. Carbines make damn worthless sniper rifles. What's next water guns?
This POS "dad" knew exactly what would happen.
My mistake. The police need marksmanship training AND rifles.
Its amazing what poor shots many police officers are.
To miss this guy with a rifle is a head scratcher.
Perhaps a lower velocity round fired from a pistol caliber carbine would not have killed the kid, perhaps in this instance it doesn't matter. Overall, a carbine in a pistol type caliber might well be more suited to this sort of job than a high velocity rifle round, but others have pointed out what is important here: the real fault lies with the perp, not the cop trying to resolve a near impossible situation.
Tragic all around.
So because one officer was wounded how many officers returned fire? That is the question that needs to be answered, I don't care which cop shot the baby.
Sick as it is that the father used his child as a human shield, I am troubled by the police reaction. As always they try to show as much restraint as possible but once one of their own is harmed or in danger the gloves come completely off, damn the consequences.
Obviously you don't hunt. Targets move.
My only hope (and it won't happen) is that they will not tell which cop fired the round that shot the baby. Better it's left for all to wonder, "was it me" than to tell one person, "yep, you were the one, you shot the baby".
It's still the fault of the dad, would you use a baby as a shield?
What is the matter with you people?? Think you could have done better? What...you think he aimed at the baby?? Get a grip, this person made a mistake of wind velocity (a sudden burst) or baby moved or dad stuck the baby in front just at the right moment.
How can you sit there and judge? I'm flabbergasted.
True but our spinless gov will still give her millions of our dollars in the lawsuit she is filing.
Sure targets move. I've hit running coyotes at 300 yards and I've missed straight away pheasants. Human error happens.
I don't know the specifics here, and I feel badly for the police involved, but to me its a head scratcher because a toddler shouldn't cover a sufficient portion of an adults body to preclude a rifle shot.
I don't know the specifics. The answer might very well be there and be plain, but I would look for the answer, not discount it as unavoidable.
I'm guessing the MSM has their facts wrong. This was LAPD SWAT and they were inside engaging this POS. I'd be surprised if they weren't using sub guns. Most likely MP5's
This is a horrible tragedy brought on by a self centered father. It was all about him and to heck with the kids. Welcome to the "me" generation. And the MSM will blame it all on the police, who were called to contain an uncontrolable parent.
In reality every one of the "excuses" you listed are just that, excuses. Not good reasons for a miss like that.
More likely the "sniper" rushed his shot because other policemen were firing their weapons. Rushing your shot is THE #1 reason for a poor shot. No excuse for that.
Sadly, I have the feeling that the cop who killed this baby knew instantly that he fired the wayward shot.
