In a rare penalty for a sex crime, a Covington child rapist agreed Tuesday to undergo surgical castration and serve 25 years in jail rather than face a possible life sentence. Keith Raymond Fremin, 52, pleaded guilty to two counts of forcible rape and two counts of molestation just before his trial on more severe charges was set to begin. The rape charges and one molestation charge involved an 11-year-old girl who lived near him in the Mandeville subdivision New Golden Shores in 1999, and the second molestation charge involved her 13-year-old sister.
Fremin was originally indicted on four counts of aggravated rape. Although state law allows prosecutors to seek the death penalty in cases where a victim is under 13, the St. Tammany Parish district attorney's office intended to pursue a life sentence.
Fremin, whose most recent address is 70413 Delta Ave., Covington, volunteered to undergo castration, a move criminal justice experts called extremely rare. After spelling out the terms of the plea bargain, state District Judge Donald Fendlason said he would revoke the lesser sentence if he doesn't receive notice of the surgical procedure by Aug. 18.
The now 17- and 19-year-old victims, who have since moved to the Netherlands, were in court Tuesday and agreed to the guilty plea.

I worked for a psychologist and according to him (and others in the field) pedophiles never "get better". There is NO amount of therapy that loses the urge. castration does NOT do anything for the drive. Putting them away for life is the ONLY solution.
I say kill them, don't care how, but if your gonna let them out you gotta first: pour acid on their face and blind them, castrate them, cut off their hands, remove one kneecap, install a taser system to go off every ten minutes and tattoo 'child molester' on their head.

They can still molest kids, there are plenty of "objects" they can use to do it.
Only if you think that it's a sex crime. It's a power crime - the offender has power over his victim. You don't need testicles for that, or ovaries for that matter. You need a functioning brain, and a way to exert power. Castrate him, and he is still capable of thought, he still has hands, and he can still speak. He's still a danger. As long as he can think, he's capable of the motivation. It's not like neutering a cat so he doesn't spray, or having your dog fixed so he doesn't wander. Kill him, and you remove any chance of him ever doing it again.
You are right that surgical intervention will not stop this, for there are hormones and other drugs. I know a man who had his testicles removed and it did not stop him, so dream on people.

Actually, the power can be wielded in non sexual ways as well. Sexual control/power is a major contributor to these folks motivation to commit the acts. There is a reason eunichs were made eunichs. Castration may actually simply remove the motivation to exert such power as much as taking away ones Harley Davidson removes their desire to buy chrome accessories.

I think castration should occur along with the sentence. First he would get surgically emasculated, then placed in the general population of a maximum security prison to serve a life sentence.
