Hopefully, this crook will be in a cell with someone hurt by his financial swindle.

Good deal. I guess it's too much to hope that he serves the whole sentence, but at least he was sentenced.

I agree.

People like Ebbers and Ken Lay gave corporate America an un-needed black eye thru their extreme greed.

Many investors and employees suffered badly because of their shenanigans.

And worse yet, all these scandals provided the dems with ammo in their bid to "re-form" corporate America.

That's a serious sentence. Gee, I thought this administration was going soft on corporate swindlers.

/ sarcasm.

He's 63. This potentially a life sentence.

I feel sorry for folks at WCOM that got hurt, but MCI, as a corporation, was built on lies, IMHO, so this is somewhat fitting (yes I know Ebbers only bought MCI relatively recently).

What was the Clinton worshipers defense of keeping him in office during the impeachment? Yes, it was because the economy was booming and we couldn't do without his leadership. Actually, the economy was floundering and submitting fraudulent figures to shareholders and the government. The SEC certainly was not eager to bring any of this corruption to an end and let the air out of these big balloon companies, because everyone in the Clinton administration was on the take and his economic numbers were keeping him in office.
The government's collusion made this corporate corruption possible, with the result that when W got into office, the corporate scandals had reached the tipping point. However, Ebbers is the one going to jail, while the Clinton SEC, Treasury, and FBI officials are not. Government has granted itself immunity from prosecution. Very convenient. They should all be joining the corporate heads in prison.

25 years is not enough. This crook falsified Worldcom's financial statements for at least 4 quarters and lots of people invested on this false data and lost their shirt. What Mr. Ebbers did was not a victimless crime.

Very difficult to spend those millions in there.

Hopefully, he "funneled" some of the millions to his family so they can live in Switzerland, or France, or Australia, or wherever they'd like.

I'd hate to see a wealthy family brought low.

One of my favorite heros is Charles Keating!

25 years is not enough for the rapaciousness of this creep ...what a scumball. Typical liberal big money people.

I wish Justice could go after Soros.

As someone who was pretty much wiped out by Ebbers' criminality, I'm thankful he got a meaningful sentance.

When I was getting my MBA, I used to joke with my accounting teacher about Bernie Ebbers.

The 2 of them were total dead ringers for each other, I mean the resemblance was such that it was difficult to tell them apart.

He was a wee bit sensitive about it, but it had been implied by other teachers that people had thought they were one and the same.....and usually acted hostile towards him.

Former Worldcom Chief Executive Bernard Ebbers was handed a 25-year prison term for directing the biggest accounting fraud in corporate history, leaving thousands of investors empty-handed.

BUMP!

I work for MCI, I dodged the layoffs but many good friends did not, I hope Bernie rots. His atty says he has a heart condition, I thought you had to have a heart for that.

Hi All-

The next billionaire fraudsters they should pursue are Sanjay Kumar, Ira Zar, Stephen Richards, Russ Artzt, and Charles Wang from Computer Associates software. These criminals were snagged by DOJ, SEC, and FBI investigators this year.

They negotiated a deal in 1998 alone where three of those crooks split $1.1 billion for keeping the stock above $53.00/share for one quarter. The big cheese of the group took home $645 million himself! That was in addition to the millions they were already making with salary and other bonuses.

The company announced big accounting problems (gee, who would have thought!) shortly thereafter and the stock sank to the single digits. Thousands upon thousands of people lost their jobs. The government finally fined the company $250 million and confiscated the passports of all the executives. These thugs are all going to stand a criminal trial this year.

WorldCom, Adelphia, Tyco, Computer Associates, Enron...they are all the lowest of the low. Each of those thieving jerks deserves DECADES in prison.

Unless I missed it, I never saw anything about restitution to those who lost money because of Ebbers' criminal actions? Quite honestly, I really don't care whether Ebbers ever spends one day in prison as long as he lives the rest of his life penniless. I would be OK with 5 years of hard time if all of the fortunes that is in the Ebbers estate is returned to those who he bilked......

But, as it goes in the liberal world, he will keep his fortunes, he will probably remain free pending appeal, and he will probably win the appeal if he can stuff enough pockets at the appeals level!!!
