The pope and the pussycats

After weeks of speculation, the cat is out of the bag — Pope Benedict XVI loves felines. It turns out that the pope is the proud owner of Chico, a black-and-white domestic short hair that lives at the pope’s home in the Bavarian town of Tübengen, Germany.

Agnes Heindl, long-time housekeeper to the pope’s brother, Father Georg Ratzinger, who lives in nearby Regensburg, told MSNBC.com that Chico is currently being looked after by the caretaker of the pope’s private residence.

“There’s also a multi-colored tabby cat that hangs around a lot of the time and keeps Chico company,” says Heindl.

Pope joke!

On a tour of Alaska, the Pope took a couple of days off to visit the mountains for some sight seeing.

He was cruising along the campground in the Pope-mobile when there was a frantic commotion just at the edge of the woods. A helpless Democrat, wearing sandals, shorts, and a "Save the Whales" T-shirt was struggling frantically, thrashing around trying to free himself from the jaws of a 10 foot grizzly.

As the Pope watched horrified, a group of Republican loggers came racing up. One quickly fired a .44 magnum into the bear's chest. The other two reached up and pulled the bleeding semiconscious Democrat from the bear. Then using long clubs, the three loggers beat the bear to death and two of them threw it onto the bed of their truck while the other tenderly placed the injured Democrat in the back seat.

As they prepared to leave, the Pope summoned them to come over. "I give you my blessing for your brave actions!" he told them. "I heard there was a bitter hatred between loggers and environmental activists, but now I've seen with my own eyes that that is not true."

As the Pope drove off, one of the loggers asked his buddies "Who was that guy ?"

"It was the Pope," another replied, "he's in direct contact with God and has access to all God's wisdom."

"Well," the logger said, "he may have access to all God's wisdom, but he sure doesn't know anything about bear hunting..... By the way, is the bait holding up okay or do we need to go back to town and grab another one?"

I wonder if papal cats behave better than the rest of them. Can you imagine kitties in the papal apartment hacking hairballs or urinating on/scratching up priceless artifacts?

His e-mail address at the Vatican (benedictxvi@vatican.va) has been swamped with messages from animal lovers asking for blessings and his prayers, according to Vatican officials.

My cat just needs to be confessed. Badly. And, we're not even Catholic.

PS: I MUST HAVE one of those cat-Cardinal hats!!! But the part about Pope Paul having dressed his cat in Cardinal's robes and a Cardinal hat!? He didn't get out enough, obviously.

Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles is a cat-lover, too. Here, he's shown with his feline Gabriel, who is named after the angel.

"...And to the other poster, cats can't help hacking up hairballs."

Yes, they can. And you don't need to buy expensive "hairball formula" food, either. Once a week, place about a 1/2 tsp of vaseline on the cats' forelegs, or tail, or some other easy-to-reach place, and the cat will lick it off. It will "grease the skids" so to speak.
