In the wake of the 7/7 London bombings many politicians and pundits have raced to renounce the phrase “Islamic terrorism.” A London Anglican priest named Paul Hawkins said in a sermon: “We can name the people who did these things as criminals or terrorists. We must not name them as Muslims.” It may seem odd to deny to the likely perpetrators of the bombings the name that they themselves prize above all others, and it is certainly a disservice to any genuine Muslim reformers who might be trying to identify and root out the causes of violence from within Islam, but such are the politically correct dogmas that prevail in most contemporary public discourse. And no one is better versed in those dogmas, or more relentless in her pursuit of any dissenters from them (with a fury that the most ruthless Inquisitor would envy), than Karen Armstrong.

You are right, of course. Saying "Islamic militants are trying to terrorize London" would mean that all their moral-relatavistic inclusiveness is proven to be bunk. Its so annoying sometimes, isn't it?

No, I believe she's a former Catholic nun who became Islamic apologists. She wrote a number of books, including "History of God". Generally she's a self-hating former Christian who is eager to denounce her own roots while uncritically elevating other civilizations.
Sure it would be devastating for radical moral relativists to admit that not all cultures are good.
Someone was saying to me recently that nearly all our former enemies end up on the White House lawn. Nelson Mandela, who's now regarded as a saint, was a couple of decades ago touted by the American administration as a communist and a terrorist. Arafat has appeared on that lawn. Now, I'm not going so far to say, goodness me, that Bin Laden will be there -- of course not....
First of all, Mandela and Arafat are not even considered decent people, let alone saints, by a majority of Americans. And secondly, her argument falls apart as soon as bin Laden's name comes up.
What a maroon.
Worse yet would be that they may actually have to say that some are bad.
We can call the people who are bombing England to cinders Nazis, but we must not call them Germans.
That makes much more sense.
As we know, the Germans are the world's best toy makers.
I thought Nelson Mandela did a very good job as President of South Africa. He was much more moderate than could have been expected from someone who had just spent 25 years in prison, on a small island.

Armstrong's audience is limited to self-hating Christians, of which there would seem to be more than a few (especially in Europe).
That is true. BUT Mandela WAS a terrorist. He thought terrorism was a legitimate tool, and he was so, so wrong about that. He did have the blood of innocents on his hands, just as John Brown, another terrorist, did.
He has to be given credit for his restraint when in power, but terrorism can NEVER be excused.
