NASHVILLE, Tenn. Vanderbilt University (search) is giving up its long-running court fight to have the name "Confederate Memorial Hall" removed from the stone front of a campus dormitory. Chancellor Gordon Gee (search) dropped the word "Confederate" from the dorm's name in 2002, citing an effort to create a more welcoming environment. But the United Daughters of the Confederacy (search), which helped finance the building, sued when the school wanted to physically remove the name from the main entrance. The case reached the Tennessee Court of Appeals, which in May ordered Vanderbilt to either leave the chiseled name alone or reimburse the UDC $50,000. University spokesman Mike Schoenfeld said Monday that Vanderbilt decided to stop pressing the issue and let the deadline to appeal the ruling pass last week. "The university has chosen not to appeal the court's decision, even though we disagree with it," Schoenfeld said. The court's ruling does not affect Vanderbilt's practice of referring to the building simply as Memorial Hall, Schoenfeld said. He said university officials would use the issue as an ongoing "educational opportunity." UDC lawyer Doug Jones said it was "unfortunate that the administration saw the need to try and rewrite history." The UDC had donated one-third of the cost of the building. The name Confederate Memorial Hall was chiseled over the main entrance in return. "This was about the South and honoring boys from Tennessee who died," Jones said.

Gee, you'd think if their principles were so important to them, they'd pony up the $50K. But as usual, they want to indulge PC-ness only at everyone else's expense.
Right! Just have to take it one step at a time TC1861.
As a northerner, I know the south has an honored history which should not be swept away by the morons who have taken over the administration of most Universities and are in the process of destroying a balanced and non biased education for our young.
Exactly...:)
That is true.
It is only a matter of time till the PC People start trying to change history in the North as well.
Mornin' Stainless!
How about a Dixie ping for some good news here!
FReegatds,
Reb
Because we all know that if you erase any indication or mention of history...it never existed.
Chancellor Gee's hatchet man, Michael Schoenfeld, led the charge in this attempted Orwellian purge.
Vanderbilt, the home of the famous Southern Fugitives of the 1930's, is doing it's best to distance itself from the city of Nashville, the state of Tennessee, and the South in general.
It's goal is apparently to be an island of northeastern-style socialism in a sea of "backward" Southern culture.
So be it. The Vandy grads can donate their hard earned money elsewhere.
Exactly. I've been saying that for years. If we follow this PC movement to its logical end, there will be no evidence that Confederacy or slavery ever existed, and we can tell Jesse Jackson and his entourage -- "we have no idea what you are talking about!"
I have to disagree with you here....
This garbage of revising both history and prostituting solid education in many areasSTARTED IN THE NORTH, particularly through the efforts of well entrenched socialist professors in places such as the Ivy league. This disease then spread to the west and south.
My four children all went to southern Universities by their parents demand.....
I have to confess that altho I was born and raised in the north my parents were southerners and when I was a child being scolded would say..."You are a naughty little Yankee".
Have a great day
LOL! Now, that's funny.
If the UDC contributed one-third of the cost of building the building, Vanderbilt shouldn't be allowed to return just $50,000...either the amount should be adjusted for inflation, or they should pay one-third of what it would cost to build the building today.
Your point about using everybody else's money to pay for PC is well taken. But I have read other articles about this case several months ago and as I recall the actual ruling required them to pay back the $50K plus compound interest. I forget when the gift was made but for some reasons the 1930s is sticking in my brain and that is long enough ago where, depending on the interest rate, the money would have likely doubled and doubled again a few times over. They would probably be looking at more like a million to two to chisel out the word "Confederate". Stinking historical revisionists.
Ought to donate to the UDC for their courage in standing up to the wanna be socialists. The school used to be respected.
Amen to that. Good news indeed
