SCANDAL IMPLOSION (Rove/Cooper/Wilson)
NY Post ^ | July 12, 2005 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 07/11/2005 11:18:25 PM PDT by Howlin

I WROTE a column on Oct. 10, 2003, about the strange case of Joseph Wilson and Valerie Plame.

--

...I offered my speculation of what an administration official might have said to a journalist to explain just how Wilson — a Clinton administration official — got the assignment in the first place: "Administration official: 'We didn't send him there. Cheney's office asked CIA to get more information. CIA picked Wilson . . . Look, I hear his wife's in the CIA. He's got nothing to do. She wanted to throw him a bone.' "

Hate to say I told you so, but . . .

--

There's no mistaking the purpose of this conversation between Cooper and Rove. It wasn't intended to discredit, defame or injure Wilson's wife. It was intended to throw cold water on the import, seriousness and supposedly high level of Wilson's findings.

While some may differ on the fairness of discrediting Joseph Wilson, it sure isn't any kind of crime.

--

So if the offense wasn't against Plame, what of the offense against Wilson? There was no offense. As many of Joe Wilson's own hottest defenders would no doubt argue in relation to President Bush, exposing a liar is not only not a crime, it's a public service.

And Wilson lied. Repeatedly.

--

What isn't controversial is this: Karl Rove didn't "out" Valerie Plame as a CIA agent to intimidate Joe Wilson. He was dismissing Joe Wilson as a low-level has-been hack to whom nobody should pay attention. He was right then, and if he said it today, he'd still be right.

And if Valerie wants to live a quiet spy life, she should stop having her picture taken by society photographers and stop getting stories written about her on the front page of the Times.

Exactly. That picture of he and his wife in the convertible says it all with his body language. "I've been to Embassy parties and I'm important!"

One more thing I do not understand:

If Valerie Plame was not undercover or had been under cover in a foreigh land for the prior five years, then the staute in question does not apply. Therefore she must have been covert during this period.

By outing her, it set her free.

Back when this silly story started I used the old cliche' "follow the money", Who benefitted the most from all this?

Now that Ms Plame has been "outted" she is free to write a book, etc and profit from this entire episode. Which as a CIA under normal circumstances she wouldn't have been

I still say "follow the money" The only slime in this entire alledged scandal is Joe Wilson and his bride Valerie Plame

I just love the White House's "No Comment - Rope a Dope!"

...roping a blind liberal hater is too easy.

If Rove was the only sourse, then why is that 'lady' sitting in jail?

Many here accused Kerry of treason - using a fairly wide description of that term.

Meeting secretly with the N.Vietnamese in France to discuss the defeat and withdrawal of US forces isn't treason in your mind?

I can't believe you've been here this long without being ZOTTED!

Your comments sound like NYTimes front page propaganda.

You are so right about the sweet mint tea. I think he has been playing a role in his own mind his whole life. Who in this day and age carries a "Fourth" in his name. Everything about him has bugged me. He is a classic example of the ugly American, that I, having lived outside the States for 30 years, had to apologize for or argue against - in support of my loyalty to the United States.

Politics a little slow down under mate?

I bet John McVain is your favorite American politician too, right after Hillary.

Do you think Hillary is a moderate like yourself?

Plame was as much a "secret agent" as you are a "moderate". I think your definitions of both are a bit out of whack.

G'day.

I don't know. Ask kcvl, who is really good at finding out connections.

I need to go for a couple of hours. I will log on from my son's computer and try to catch up.

My, I feel quite cheery this morning!

some people think the "leaker" is Judith Miller; that she told the WH staff Plame was in the WMD group which is Miller's specialty too. So it was a media person not the WH that told the world about the job of a CIA agent. Did she tell Novak?

RE #70...What do the C, BU, CE, and Finance after Wilson's "Occupation" in the chart of his donations mean?

2. Why would the special prosecutor continue the investigation if he could find no law broken? If it were me, I would shut the investigation down as soon as I hit a terminal dead end, write a report and get back to making big lawyer bucks.

Several months ago Fitzgerald, the prosecutor, issued one of his rare statements on this case. Ignored by almost everyone except a few people on FR was a comment that the investigation had branched out into other issues. BTW even Fox News has ignored that statement.

IIRC one of the other issues was a planned raid on a phony Islamonazi "charity" that was leaked and somebody tipped off the "charity" in time to thwart the raid.

Now I'm not saying the reporter tipped off the Islamonazis, but she MIGHT have been one of the people contacted by the leaker and that MIGHT be the source she's protecting...

Or it could be about some other branch that investigation developed.

But Rove's committed a classic case of treason - deliberately outing a secret operative for base political motives - and Freepers seem willing to give him a get-out-of-jail card.

There is no indication that Rove outed anyone.

What he said was that Wilson's wife at CIA got him the yellow cake mission.

1. He didn't name her.
2. He didn't say she was a covert operator. (People who are doing personnel assignments work are not currently in covert roles. If James Bond took Moneypenny's job at the desk, and I told you Bond ordered the tickets for the Q's trip to Jamaica, would that be outing Bond as a DoubleO?)
3. This is a witchhunt.

It always helps to have the FACTS before you accuse othres of hypocrisy. Otherwise you look like a complete and utter fool.

Well, he/she/it is a journalist. When have they ever let facts get in the way of their 'story'?

CBS News just did a typical report, trying to make it look like Bush lied because the admin talked about it in the past but won't now(though not mentioning that in between the prosecutor asked them to refrain from comment). Bill Plante said, "At best it makes the administration look, 'stupid'." No bias there, no siree....

That makes a lot of sense. For sure, she is not in jail to protect Karl Rove.
