IMHO, we did it exactly right. Read this book: The Hunt for Bin Laden, TASK FORCE DAGGER for a very accurate look at the war in Afghanistan for the first 100 days. I got the account verified by buddies of mine in SpecOps. Although one of the names mentioned in the book Keith Idema is not well liked in the SpecOps community in general. But the actions were verified. Everybody thought that Afghanistan was going to be the same QUAGMIRE for us it was for the USSR.
It could've might've been. Almost was because the NON-SF folks tried to horn their way into the newest gee whiz let's go get 'em...WAR. Conventional styles of combat against guerilla tactics is a loser in that terrain as the roooskies found out. But Rumsfeld prevailed in saying he wanted Special Forces boots on the ground. In the first 100 days just 100 operators and TACAIR assets (and working with the warlords of the northern alliance) killed over thirty THOUSAND AQ and Taliban troops. With minimal losses to our side. That's doin' it right!
The book was written by Robin Moore. Yes the same Robin Moore of The Green Berets book and John Wayne movie during 'Nam. Just as he did then, this aging old war correspondent (airborne and Q course qualified!) actually went along on several operations. Those guys really took care of the old guy, that's how beloved he is by the Special Forces.
Slowboat, I have to agree with this 100%. But we should use neutrons and keep the gas. We'll be needing it more than anybody else to get back on our feet.
If that were to happen (a nuclear response by us) I also very much doubt if the Islamist extremeist nations would even care. The EU would be furious (who cares?) and the French would surrender (as if anybody would notice that).
PERSONAL OPINION...
Whenever is see the term "worldwide;" I consider the USA as part of the "world."

AMERICA'S TERRORIST SCREENING CENTER (TSC)
Protecting America from Terrorist Attack
08/01/05
It's a place of anxious, serious faceslike you see at NASA's Mission Control right before a launch. People from different agencies and companies man the phones and computers 24/7 as queries come in from checkpoints across the country and worldall with one question: do I have a known or appropriately suspected terrorist on my hands?
Three scenarios:
1. Officer Jones from Atlanta in a patrol car says she got a suspected terrorist match on a name of a man she stopped for speedingnow she's looking for a physical description that will tell her if hes the same person.
2. A Customs and Border Protection inspector calls from a Dallas airport about a person on an incoming international flight manifestgive me more information: should I let this person into the country?
3. A consular officer in Manila cables a list of visa applicants: should each one be granted a visa to visit the U.S.?
That's precisely what the TSC can tell them. TSC Director Donna Bucella, a former federal prosecutor, puts it this way: "We're here to get information to the people who can stop dangerous types from entering the U.S....and who can identify dangerous types who are already on our streets and arrest them. The TSCs role," she adds, "places it squarely at the intersection of local law enforcement and the intelligence community, bridging the gap between national security, homeland defense, and the police officer on patrol.
Want to learn more? We are posting information about the center on an inside page for your convenience. To date, we have included how it came into being; its mission; what it does; and why it does it. And don't miss its FAQs; they will tell you everything you wanted to know and then some:
Who is included in TSC's database: domestic terrorists like Timothy McVeigh? U.S. citizens? You?
Are people ever removed from the database?
If you have security issues when you cross into the U.S., or if you've been told that you're on an airline terrorist watchlistdoes that mean you're in the database?
How is the Center prevented from encroaching on the civil liberties of Americans?
Stay tuned for more information. We will be adding more to the TSC site as it becomes available.

Ports ordered to be on the alert for strange diseases http://vietnamnews.vnagency.com.vn/showarticle.php?num=02HEA020805 (02-08-2005)
HA NOI The Ministry of Health is asking personnel at the nations entry points, such as airports, bordergates and harbours, to be on the alert for the penetration of strange diseases into Viet Nam.
All persons with a fever upon entering the country will be quarantined and given timely medical treatment, according to deputy health minister Trinh Quan Huan.
Huan said a strange disease transmitted from swine that occurred recently in China had not yet appeared in Viet Nam. "We have seen encephalitis B infections pass from pigs to human through mosquitoes. We now have vaccine to prevent the disease," said Huan.
Bird flu
A woman in Ha Tay Province tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus, bringing to a total of four the number people infected with the virus in the province since early this year, one of whom has died, said the director of provincial Preventive Health Centre.
Centre director Hoang Ñuc Hanh said Nguyen Thi Them, 49, was brought to the local hospital with symptoms of fever, coughing and chest pain on July 22. Three days later, she was moved to the National Institute for Clinical Research in Tropical Medicine and received the testing result there.
Hanh said Thems family ate chicken bought at a local market some days before she showed signs of fever. A centre team has visited her village in Quoc Oai District to spray chemicals around the family and market. VNS
Just some speculation by another person here:
Aug 6, 2005 is feared to be a prime candidate for Al-Qaeda's "American Hiroshima,"
a planned nuclear attack on large US cities. It is the 60th anniversary of
the US bombing of Hiroshima.
A count of the days from 9.11.01 to 8.6.05
Some make the mistake of not including 9.11 itself in the day count for Sept 2001.
The attack came early in the morning isn't it most logical to include it?

Well I guess you are all already talking about it.
To the terrorists, it'll always be "open season" on Americans.
Yep, "worldwide" caution.
Good article. I don't know if it has been posted:

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) Dozens of Islamic extremists are involved in terrorist cells in Australia, the federal police commissioner confirmed Wednesday after a former spymaster claimed it was only a matter of time before an attack in Australia.
Michael Roach, a senior official who recently retired from the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, said Australia is facing an imminent risk of a terrorist attack and has called for more extreme counterterrorism powers.
He said Australias two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, are home to Islamic extremists who have received specialized training from terrorist groups overseas.
Perhaps the number is around 50 or 60 in Australia that are working in separate cells, Roach told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. late Tuesday. The threat is real. Its a matter of when this (an attack) will happen.
The would-be terrorists had developed a high degree of precision in their methods of assault, Roach said.
Mick Keelty, the commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, confirmed Roachs allegations about the number of suspected terrorists operating in Australia, saying the figures were not news to the intelligence community.
Get meat and poultry in your freezer now. Russia has quarantined all poultry farms.
Before 9/11, we were pretty sure something was about to happen overseas as well.. I'd open the window up to the 15th (end of ww2)... Probably might as well let it run till 9/11. Though, it never really closes, I suppose.
Hi Revel.
Nice to see you here.
Thanks Jellyjam.
Islamic extremists in Australia does not suprise me.

DC, I don't purchase foreign food including meat and poultry.
re: And if the attacks do occur, I doubt there would be much opposition to such an action."
And do you also think its just coincidental that China and Russia are presently massing forces in the Pacific theatre for unprecedented 'joint exercises' involving their Pactifc fleets and long-range aircraft in of all places, Vladivostok [read: principal Soviet-era sub base and planning center]??
No one seemed too excited about a nuclear attack on 8/06 when I mentioned it several weeks ago. I must be losing my touch...
Have a great weekend!
