uly 11, 2005 -- The NYPD has disconnected cellphone service in all the city's vehicular tunnels since the London terror blasts to prevent anyone from detonating a bomb, authorities said yesterday.
Service will remain off until further notice, spokesmen for the Port Authority and Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.
PA spokesman Tony Ciavolella said the cutoff came "at the request of the NYPD." The PA operates the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
MTA spokesman Brian Dolan said a similar policy was enacted Thursday in the Brooklyn-Battery and Midtown tunnels.
A police source said disabling cellphones in the tunnels is a good security measure, but not a foolproof one.

You are correct but - we have to fight as we can fight, we have to disrupt their current plans. Of course they will compensate and work around us, but we will also compensate and work around any of their efforts we become aware of.
I am proud that they are working on actions that will disrupt the terror plans. So much better to miss a phone call than to have to dig 100 bodies out of the subway. This is not permanent, but we have to fight as we can fight - otherwise, we are just sheep being slaughtered at the whim of the terrorists.
In wartime when the bombs were raining on England, they did not complain that their freedom to stay out in the street was taken away. They fought with what they had and we will do the same to protect our families.
Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
Yea, but this only causes them to use a different type of detonator, such as a timer or a homocide bomber.
I live in Northern Va. everything looks suspicious around here.
Point the first, the London bombs used timers, not cellphones.
Point the second, the bad guys, if you don't detain them, will find a way to wreak havoc, one way or another.
Point the third, I guess in the minds of the Port Authority folk, no one ever needs to call for a cop, firefighter or ambulance while in the tunnels.
When are the "ones what be's in charge" stop the knee-jerk responses and work proactively (i.e., securing the borders and going after the bad guys who are already here)?
Indeed.
I thought of that. But 15 years ago very few people had cell phones. So I guess we are regressing
When you want to restrict Liberty and control people any excuse is good enough.
Did you really think all 500 or so pages of the 'Patriot' Act were written after 9/11?

There are call boxes in the tunnels.
OK, you're on the A train, and you get a glimpse inside a backpack, and see an orange brick of Semtex and some wires.
How do you report it? Hmmm?
Ok. I just read Null and Void's point.
I take back my pointing out that there are call boxes in the tunnels.
Ewwwwww. Interesting question.
Fascinating...
That, and where would FLT 93 have ended up if the current ban on cell phones had been in place on 9/11? The passengers would have blissfully sat there assuming they were under the old rules:
The plane is hijacked. Flown somewhere. Threats are made. Demands are voiced. Compromises reached. Pretty much everyone goes home with an interesting story to tell their grandkids.
Would we have lost Congress? The White House? Or what?
>Darn good idea<
I understand your motive, I really do. However, what happens to the person who is mugged, and cannot call for help, or whose family member is stricken with a heart attack, and cannot reach the person on the subway, or any number of other scenarios?
The terrorists win, in either case.
'They' (not to sound too paranoid) have reams of laws just waiting for an incident to sway public support in their direction.
Everyone does it. It's simply the prudent thing for anyone with an Agenda and a Dream to do.
I know - it is a problem. But, the only option available is to disrupt their plans. Now, they don't have the satisfaction of knowing that their cell phone activated plans will work. And, we can turn the signal back on when we wish.
I would expect we will see continual disruption moves by our Homeland Security. Why give the enemy free reign over our systems. Make it as hard as possible on them and keep throwing them off their game.
It is too late to report...you react.
Did you really think all 500 or so pages of the 'Patriot' Act were written after 9/11?
Good point. Much of what people complain about in the Patriot Act is really the Antiterrorism Act of 1995, whooshed through Congress after OKC by Bill C and Janet R.
