Little guys want to take a stand in Maplewood - (Missouri neigborhood fights property grab!)

Far removed from the grandeur of the U.S. Supreme Court is Tiffany's Diner in Maplewood. It's an old-fashioned place where breakfast is served 24 hours a day. During the non-rush hours, customers sit at the counter - 18 stools - and a quiet, peaceful mood prevails. During the busy times, which is to say late night/early morning when the bars close, patrons cram into the place, often standing shoulder to shoulder. The jukebox blares. Eleven plays for a dollar.

I stopped by Tuesday afternoon.

Janet Baker was behind the counter. She has worked at the diner for 25 years. That gives her midlevel seniority. Joann White, better known as Daisy Mae, has been there about as long, but the senior employee is Rosie Leach, who is 78 and still works three six-hour shifts each week. Rosie smokes nonfiltered Pall Malls.

For all its charm, Tiffany's is not a place for people who find cigarette smoke offensive. Unless, of course, your love of hash browns - with white gravy or melted cheese - overcomes your dislike of smoke. The little diner goes through about 600 pounds of potatoes a week. Advertisement

"This place is like 'Cheers' without alcohol," she said. So it seems. Several years ago, the waitress-cook working the afternoon shift had a seizure. One of the patrons called an ambulance and another patron calmly took over behind the counter until a replacement arrived.

Now the diner is threatened. The city of Maplewood wants to redevelop the block on which the diner sits. More than 20 property owners - most of them business owners - stand to lose their property to eminent domain. And if the diner goes?

Looks like Kelo is coming close to home. Maplewood is ripe for development. I wonder who the developer is.

I used to live two, maybe three blocks away from this very same Maplewood diner, back when I lived in Maplewood (in the 1980s).

If the Repubs have even HALF a brain, they can ride Kelo to three new conservative Supreme Court justices.

"BITS" is just around the corner....."......right, and for more reasons than just the Supremes. My feeling is that true Americans aren't going to put up with America bashing from these libs, OR with the PC handling of Islamists for much longer.

Muslim "moderates" clearly are in no position or mood to truly take out these animals in their midst. Europe is already lost to Islam. Eurabia is an established fact. By demographics alone, it's lost.......not to mention from their own stupidity. So, that leaves America. Doesn't it?

Thanks for your comments, nothingnew.

And regards to the Lady Mary, as always!

Char :)
