Why has U.S. been spared?
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 08 July 2005 | Peter A. Brown

The London bombing once again begs the question: Why haven't terrorists struck the United States in the past four years?

Certainly the effects of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks are still felt by Americans.

Unfortunately, terrorists have succeeded in changing how we live our daily lives.

Americans worry more about being blown up now than when thousands of Soviet ICBMs with multiple nuclear warheads were pointed at the United States.

These days, we live under the constant fear of being the next victim of a random act, a mentality that makes us more fearful and less generous to strangers and forces changes in behavior that cost us all time and money.

Nonetheless, it is useful to ponder why the bad guys haven't struck within the United States itself since 9-11.

It certainly is not because Osama & Co. hate us less than they once did.

As a generation Xer, and child of the 80's, I have to vehemently disagree with this statement.

As a child of the 50's growing up on air bases, hearing the alert klaxon sounding every couple of weeks and knowing everyone I knew and loved might be vaporized in the next 15 minutes; I have to say, you can get used to a lot of bad stuff. Life is still worth living.

There are still ICBMs pointed at us so the terrorists thinking they will back us down with death and destruction haven't really learned their lessons.

On September 10 of 2001, one could have stood up and said (truthfully) that there hadn't been a terrorist attack on U.S. soil in either five years (if you want to count TWA Flight 800) or six years (Oklahoma City).

I think embassies are considered US soil. The US embassies in Kenya and Nairobi were attacked in 1998. Also, I don't know about maritime law, but one could argue that the 2000 attack on the USS Cole was an attack on the US.

Possibly because the Islamicists have realized that attacking the US was counterproductive to their cause.

Yes, and possibly because President Bush told the Saudis to pass on to the bint Ladin clan that any further attacks on the United States by Islamofacists will cause this administration to declare Islam to be an organized criminal activity rather than a religion and will result in the immediate wiping of Mecca and Medina from the face of the earth.

An excellent point, also in european country's you don't have to worry about some redneck or gangbaner pulling out a handcannon and giving you a premature introduction to Allah, and that my friend is becoming a greater possibility with each passing day to our would be terrorist.

ACLU, CAIR, DUmmies and the MSM would do anyhing to let that happen. Luckily, the polls show that Americans still support to have the terrorists to be jailed at Guantanamo Bay.

People under 30 have no clue how dangerous and serious the Cold War really was.

Bears repeating. Or how many people ended up dying, for that matter.

As to the matter at hand, we haven't been "spared," it's simply quite a bit more logistically difficult to mount an attack in the United States that would be worth the inevitable reprisal in terms of mosque searches and even potential pogroms. It isn't likely to stay that way, but for now the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

I would not be surprised to see individual suicide bombings at some point, but heaven help the nearest mosque if the means are traceable. Suicide bombings aren't actually the work of lone fanatics, they take an organization to recruit and arm the bomber. Such organizations are, I am sure, currently being developed, but they have neither the historical presence or density that they enjoy in Europe.

We also shoot back. That may not deter a suicide bomber but it has to be in the mind of the guy who arms him.

I agree. And very few people under 30 have any clue how dangerous and serious THIS War really is.

Yup, grew up in the 80s. Thanks to the lefty media, it seemed like nuclear war was imminent every freaking day.

Seems hard to believe now, but people forget so soon.....

Why haven't terrorists struck the United States in the past four years ?

Because we're self destructing.....trying to save the world while we lose the United States. Terrorists lit the fuze....our polidiots are letting it burn to justify incremental destruction of our constitutional freedoms . Personally I believe their estimate of how long that fuze will burn will result in it blowing up in their face......

When ONE captured terrorist murdering crazy POS in gitmo can tie up hundreds of civilian and military investigators, the courts, the suspect servicemen, their commanders , their replacements, and congress critters by the hundreds for hours and weeks why would the islamakazi's want to attack us ?

Our BS PC mannerisms are self destruction at it's best, costly and destroying our freedoms, fiscal abilities, personal security and we all just sit back and whine and bitch. Had I been the planner for this terrorist op against the west and Christianity I could not have done a better job of letting us orchestrate our own demise........

Until we get medieval on islam, it supporters, handlers and sympathizers as the sick murdering cult that it is, inside or out of the USA , then we remain under siege 24/7......

Just my opinion of course....

It works either way. They'd love the opportunity to denounce the US should anything appropriate happen to their innocent little darlings.

growing up on air bases

Growing up on air bases might have exacerbated my concerns as well...I forgot about that little bit; it always just seemed like a normal life to me, so I never give it too much thought. :)
