BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq signed a military pact with Iran on Wednesday in a breakthrough with a former foe, but al Qaeda said it would kill Egypt's kidnapped envoy and attack more diplomats to stop the government winning international support.
Defence Minister Saadoun al-Dulaimi signed a pact in Tehran agreeing to accept Iranian military training and other cooperation with the country Iraq fought for a decade under ousted leader Saddam Hussein.

I've read a lot that suggests that Iran is responsible for a good portion of the insurgency, especially the so-called 'Al-Sadr uprising'. I hope they are not pulling a communist ploy wherby they bribe, threaten and cojole a country from within...
That is correct!
Rumsfeld has made that statement many times. This govt of Iraq is sovereign and it has the ability to choose - even if we don't necessarily believe it will be in their best interests.

I pray to God that these people are smart enough to understand the gift they have been given, but news like this gives me little hope. All things through God as they say.
How do we know they didn't. It's not the sort of thing they'd make public you know.
Still, I wouldn't agree to anything with that nest of vipers until I saw some action on that topic. But this is the Middle East, and things are not always what they seem on the surface.
I know .. there's always so much we don't know .. it's hard to make good decisions.
