I was kind of wondering while reading 1776 (and a couple months ago Johnny Tremaine) what side I would have taken if I'd lived back then.

I may have thought it quite reasonable for the King to tax the American colonies to help pay for their expenses defending us in the French and Indian War.

I identify with the part of the Declaration of Independence that says, "Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes."

OTOH, I've always been an independent sort and don't suffer anyone's yoke lightly.

I definitely wonder why my two direct ancestors decided to go with the Revolution.

Yes we want the Olympics we have not had it since 1948 and although we have had the soccer Euro championships and the Commonwealth games in Scotland this will be the first major international sporting even since the Soccer World Cup in 1966.

Londoners may not be too keen because for the next ten years they will have to pay extra on their council tax (tax that is applicable to all households rented and owned covering local services etc).

Hello all.

Ouch, that picture of W makes me hurt! I hope his scrapes this time aren't as bad.

I think lots of Americans are more than a little thankful that we didn't get the Olympics. Warm congratulations to you snugs, but we're sort of glad to let the Brits deal with it this time around.

Yes frogs is everyday language for reference to the French I nearly typed that in my reply earlier but then thought better of it as it might have been classed by FR as being racist LOL

I'm very grateful to England for defeating the Spanish Armada and later in history defeating Napoleon.

Also, you all bore the brunt of resisting Hitler for a couple years before we sent our military over to help.

My father's people came over here from Hertfordshire in the 1650's, and we still have a soft spot in our hearts for England. His mother was the child of a Scot immigrant. My mother's father was a German immigrant, who started as a pharmacist and then went into the clergy.

Hi ya I understand re the olympics but we have not had anything that major for years so it will be good for us and in particular for Kent. We will get the spin off benefits without having to pay for it. Londoners will have to pay via their local taxes whereas in Kent we will get extra jobs etc because a lot of the training facilities will be in our county.

It is rumoured that the athletics track in Ashford (The Julie Rose Stadium) will be used as one of the training facilities and that Canterbury will host training facilites for hockey.

You bring up a great point, patriciaruth. I have often tried to do the same thing -- put myself back in that time and try to figure out which side I would have taken. Decisions made at turning points depend on the particular part of the truth we see clearly from our vantage point. Likely it would not have been the 'slam dunk' that we always assume it was for most people.

I got 1776, but haven't read it yet. What did you think of it?

Cool beans about getting the Olympics, snugs. Britain will handle security about 1000% better than France would, will be a safer event all the way around.

Evenin' Dosers and HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PRESIDENT!
