Hey, you lost your 2 cents.

I'll have to go back and read the thread and see how they managed it.

SAR or the DAR? What are the benefits

I am a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Rev.)

It depends on what benefits you are looking for.

My father didn't want my sister or I to join the Daughters of the American Revolution. (DAR) Back then, it was a segregated and racist organization.

Like most things, it has probably evolved and not a stuffy, holier than thou place anymore.

Although it pleased Dad we never joined, I am not sure he was aware that we may not have been eligible anyway because at that time all 4 of your grandfathers had to be native born Americans, and our mother's father was naturalized.

Even with the wind blowing Laura's hair all over the place she still looks lovely and dignified. She is truly an asset to our country.

I was under the impression that you only had to have one ancestor who fought in the Revolution now, but maybe I'm wrong.

I know it used to be elitest and racist, and also assumed it still had remnants of that, but I have no evidence to back that up (and you know what they say about those who assume :)........

We have two direct ancestors, father and son, who were in the Connecticut militia and served in the Revolutionary War.

But I still have the impression that the DAR didn't want anyone with recent immigrant blood breaking into their conclave back in the old days.

Probably not. I know many people long for the good old days, but in SOME ways, we've actually improved.

One of my husband's direct ancestors fought in the Revolution. I know his name, but not his regiment.

You're not habituated yet.

(Which will happen just when you don't have to do it any more. ;)
