Hillary Clinton Blasts President Bush on Border Security

2008 presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is blasting President Bush for lax enforcement of the nation's immigration laws, saying the White House has dropped the ball on border security and put the country at risk for another major terrorist attack.

In a statement posted to her newly revamped official Senate web site, Clinton charges: "The Bush administration is failing to meet what should be the basic requirements of immigration policy: continuing our American tradition of welcoming immigrants who follow the rules and are trying to build a better life for their families, while strengthening national security in a post 9-11 world."

In a potentially potent bid to win Red State support in 2008, the former first lady is playing the role of tough cop:

"Our current immigration laws need to be reformed," she urges. "We need a better solution to the question of illegal immigration which recognizes the conflict between the need to enforce the law, and the reality that too many employers are using undocumented workers today."

Clinton says that while "this administration has failed to provide the resources to protect our borders, or a better system to keep track of entrants to this country . . . I welcome the addition of more border security."

She pins blame for the failure directly on the Oval Office, saying, "President Bush refused to provide the necessary funding in his Fiscal Year 2006 proposed budget sufficient to hire all of the border patrol agents that had been authorized."

"Fortunately," Clinton adds, "during the Senate’s debate on the budget in March of 2005, we passed an amendment to provide increased funding for border patrol agents."

Then, in a none-too-subtle dig at GOP foot-dragging on the immigration issue, Clinton says: "I hope the Republican leadership will support the maintenance of this funding, to provide the resources necessary to properly protect our borders."

Now, a smart politician would move right at her, just like you do with a Knight on a chessboard. Push her to sponsor an immigration reform bill. Offer to partner with her on it, along with Tom Tancredo. Make her run away. She and her friends in the media would drop this latest beard like it was afire.

Oh, I agree with you that Bush is wrong on this issue. But does Hillary think red-staters are that stupid that they can't see through her?

She has no intentions of actually doing anything about it if she were prez. She just wants to zig when she sees Bush zag.

I can't believe the LACK of nerve of our leaders.

Hillary is playing a political game, you know it, I know it, and most people here know it. The problem is, it's going to play extremely well to the masses and could very well topple the Republicans from power if they do NOT pull their heads out of their asses on this issue.

President would veto, which gets her off the hook.

Since when are Leftists in favor of border security? Oh. I remember...

When they're vying for a presidential nomination. The rest of the time such things are racist and zenophobic.

She looks more conservative on border security to me than does Bush. Bush had better get his act together.

Hillary doesn't have to get people to vote for her. All she has to do is exploit the issue and get people to not vote for another open borders sovereignty sellout like Bush.

The best way to avoid this is to nominate and run a staunch true conservative (unlike Bush), who will enforce the borders and immigration laws (which would exclude Jeb, btw).

It would never get that far. Unfortunately. I'd like to see Dubya put to that decision.

The problem is that if the 'Rats succeed, the borders will be more open than ever.

Nah, I don't see it. Hillary won't be running against Bush in '08. So it'll be a debate between her and her opponent.
But let's hope not because we have an emergency that can't wait for 08. Bush has gotta fix the borders now!

I think Clinton is making a smart move by raising this issue. And those of us who don't want to see her president would be wise to take this issue seriously. Telling her to shut up won't work.

She didn't do anything about illegal immigration or terrorism when she was president. Niether did her co-president.

This is what you get when you leave that big a gap between what the people want and what you're prepared to do. If there's room for Hillary to run to your right on an issue, you know you've got a problem, Mr. President.

Hillary knows that the bad guys have already come across the border and have been working with the South American and Mexican gang bangers for some time. The odds are pretty good that they will be doing something nasty at some point.

Well, I seem to recall that EVERY Democrat under the sun called Republicans Racists when they tried to pass a number of immigration referendums in CA.

Remember? CA tried to stem the flow of illegals and the entire national DEM apparatus had a field day tagging every Republican as a hate-filled racist. Yeah, I believe Hillary is sincere, sure. /s
