f President Bush chooses Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, that might well doom the GOP Senate incumbents, those on the religious right say, by infuriating the party's fervent, evangelical grassroots, Newsweek reports in the current issue.
"If the president is foolish enough to nominate Al Gonzales, what he will find is a divided base that will take it out on candidates in 2006," says Manuel Miranda, who heads a coalition of conservative groups called Third Branch Conference.
A former legal counsel to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Miranda went on to threaten retribution against Bush's brother Jeb, should he decide to run for president.
"We're not Republican patsies," he tells Newsweek. "Jeb Bush can go sell insurance."
Newsweek Chief Political Correspondent Howard Fineman and Deputy Washington Bureau Chief Debra Rosenberg preview the battle ahead for O'Connor's replacement in the July 11 cover, "O'Connor's Odyssey" (on newsstands Monday, July 4).
"This is probably the most significant Supreme Court resignation and nomination we'll see in our lifetimes," says Jay Sekulow, counsel of the conservative American Center for Law and Justice. His counterpart at the liberal Alliance for Justice agreed. "The stakes are now enormous," says Nan Aron.
Also in the cover package, Assistant Managing Editor Evan Thomas and Contributing Editor Stuart Taylor Jr. recount the legacy of O'Connor and her years on the bench, where she was the classic swing vote in countless 5 to 4 decisions.
Newsweek also lists the likely contenders for O'Connor's successor: Edith Brown Clement, a Fifth Circuit judge; John Roberts, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C.; J. Michael Luttig, a Fourth Circuit judge; J. Harvie Wilkinson III, a Fourth Circuit judge; Janice Rogers Brown, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. and Gonzales.
Just last month Spector said something right after the "Gang of Sixteen" brokered their deal that I find very telling about where Spector is coming from.
Spector was asked if he would vote for Janice Rogers Brown and he said something like this, (I can get the exact quote if you need it) He said: "I will not announce how I will vote, I can get far more by not revealing what my intentions are"
So what that tells me is that Spector is for sale, and he has no principles
Evidently a bazillion won't do it.
It's the DYNASTY thing. It hasn't anything at all to do with Katherine Harris ( whom I never mentioned ),nor the Shavio case, or anything else. Besides all of the screaming, from the Dems, about "stolen election", as soon as President Bush won the election in '00, the tortured wailing about THE BUSH DYNASTY/WE DON'T HAVE KINGS IN AMERICA garbage began.
I watched the Thomas hearings, and I watched the Ginsburg hearings, I challenge anybody to say the two of them were treated the same, Ginsburg was an ACLU attorney and I expected her to be opposed, or at least not get any republican support. Nope Orin Hatch wanted to play nice. Those days are over, it's now time to take back the Courts from these Activists

If the W doesn't nominate a conservative in the vein of Thomas or Scalia, I am done voting for Republicans period. End of story. Even Scalia is too weak for my tastes, with his respect for past decisions outweighing his desire to be "constitutional". But I would settle for that if I had to.
Gonzales would be the last straw for me. People can say what they want about his past abortion rulings being dictated by the state laws of Texas. But his affirmative action stance was fully chosen by him and reflects either a liberal mindset or an unprincipled conservatism. Both are unacceptable.
that's insane. jeb bush is an outstanding governor and would be the ONLY logical choice for prez if his last name woudln't hurt him.

The dynasty thing ONLY "works", sort of, for Dems. As soon as President Bush the younger was elected the first time, the talk, by both Dems and GOPers, was that Jeb's presidential potential was now over. With the re-election of the president, it was begun again and stronger.
Jeb has baggage that is NOT even being discussed on this thread ( his daughter's drug problem and his wife's run-in with the nondisclosure/tampering with the labels, customs problem ), which combined with the "dynasty" thing and the Shavio case and goodness only knows what else, would automatically spell his doom. And lest you forget, his wife does NOT want him to run/be president.

You think that Scalia is a moderate? How about Thomas?
If neither of those men are Conservative enough for you, then who is?

That's what I was about to say.
I mean, I've got concerns about Gonzalas, but I'm certainly not going to instantly go nuts on Bush if he does nominate him (which I doubt). I'll take the 'wait and see' approach. He may well surprise us.
All I know, is that Bush has lived up to my trust better then any politician since Reagan, and even in some ways better. He's got a whole lot of slack on my rope. Could he hang himself with it? Possibly, but I doubt it.
