Critics Call Radio Hosts' Trip Propaganda Mission

Sunday, July 03, 2005 By Kelley Beaucar Vlahos

WASHINGTON — A contingent of conservatives talk radio hosts is headed to Iraq this month on a mission to report "the truth" about the war: American troops are winning, despite headlines to the contrary.

The "Truth Tour" has been pulled together by the conservative Web cast radio group Rightalk.com and Move America Forward, a non-profit conservative group backed by a Republican-linked public relations firm in California.

"The reason why we are doing it is we are sick and tired of seeing and hearing headlines by the mainstream media about our defeat in Iraq," Melanie Morgan, a talk radio host (search) for KSFO Radio in San Francisco and co-chair of Move America Forward, said.

Morgan said the media is "imposing a Vietnam template on this war."

"This is not Vietnam," she said. "War is war, and it's dangerous, and the killing is taking place all of the time. At the same time, where there is danger, there is success and there is a mainstream media that is determined to shut out that success."

She said the group is going to Iraq to support American troops, who see a disconnection with what they experience and what's being reported in the United States. She said the incongruence is leading to "morale problems."

But critics, including independent journalists who have reported from Iraq, say the trip is a propaganda mission for the U.S. military and the Bush administration and cannot be considered "journalism" by any standards.

"This is the most pathetic thing I've heard in a long time. They should be ashamed of themselves," Peter Beinart, editor of left-leaning The New Republic magazine, said.

>> This from a guy employed by a magazine that gave us Stephen Glass. I consider the New Republic to be the laughingstock of political rags.

>> I think if they are going over to get an idea of what war is really like then they should get in a Hummer and travel the roads with the troops.

The first American journalist killed in Iraq was Michael Kelly -- in a Hummer, traveling with the 3rd Infantry Division. Ironically, he was a former editor of the New Republic and still wrote in liberal media, though he had become one of the most thoughtful conservative voices in the country. Tony Snow on Fox mourned Kelly as "one of the handful of editorial geniuses in our generation," whose death was "an indescribable loss to the journalism profession." Indeed it was.

I agree with you, but your last sentence. "A neutral press, as they like to claim they are, serves no one but the enemy."

A neutral press would serve the USA, while the lib propaganda machine serves the enemy. Is more like it. I'm sure this is what you meant.

And we know they claim to be neutral, which is possibly the biggest joke in the history of mankind!

Except for the ones that actually think they are neutral!

Fox news is certainly disappointing. On one hand they should be commended for the reports from the journalists on the battlefields of the middle east such as from Oliver North, Geraldo Rivera, Steve Harrigan and more. While I have seen little positive from any other media source.

Most media outlets have courted the cliche' that sensationalism sells and it seems that the ad revenues they get prove that. While the MainStream Media has been chasing the almighty dollar they have foolishly wrought tremendous damage in the United States.

Fox News built its American Empire by including a conservative point of view when the other media outlets obviously ignored the conservative point of view. Now that FNC is on top it seems to be succumbing to chasing the almighty dollar like the rest. While FNC has not abandoned its conservative point of view it has clearly shifted its focus from honest reporting to highlighting sensational stories to further increase its ad revenues.

Seriously, I believe he's said he wants to go, I'm not sure why he hasn't yet, but I'd bet having the young kids at home weighs heavily on him.

. . .hardly a 'fair and balanced' observation and a contradiction by it's own complaint. . .do these folks really have eyes that see? And just 'who' are the independent journalists?

Name names, please. (We know who the critics are and where they come from.)

The above would be laughable; if it were not so pathetic. . .

Hannity needs to go to visit the troops in Iraq. He needs to live up to his "Your a great American" mantra. Savage needs to go over to Iraq also.

Less talk, Mo Walk.
