CNN) -- One member of a U.S. special operations reconnaissance team missing in Afghanistan since Tuesday has been rescued, a U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity told CNN.
The team member "evaded the enemy and was successfully rescued by U.S. forces," the official said.
No other details are being released because the search for other missing members of the team continues, the official said.
A military helicopter crashed Tuesday while bringing reinforcements to the team, killing all 16 service members aboard.
The U.S. military believes the chopper was downed by a rocket-propelled grenade.
It is the worst single-day death toll for U.S. forces since the Afghan war began nearly four years ago.

Great News! Hopefully this rescued soldier will also be able to provide info that will aid in the search for the others.
That has already been happening for the past 48 hours - Rest assured - Lets hope this turns out that all (not just One) of the missing SEALs have been recovered alive -
Thanks for the ping..
Ok your a sinner and will burn in hell...:-)
I agree totally with you on the media role. I consider the work of these guys "above and beyond" on an every day basis and I'm sure they're doing recon at the same time that they're trying to find an escape route. Praying for them all the way!!
That movie sucked so bad for not even being close to reality that it was a comedy. Every few minutes you would see the pilot do something that was counter to what is taught in E&E training.
Even for a buddy who wasn't in the military he pointed out the huge goofs in the movie.
Is it really that hard for Hollyweird to consult someone to get the scenes even close to being right?
Hackman always plays these roles superbly. Sutherland, too. These guys put these new kids like Cruise to shame. Maybe it's because they have their heads on straight.
Well, it's Hollywood, not real life.
And it's pretty much always been that way. Most of the World War II - era classics have their belief-defying moments, too.
Gene Hackman in good form always elevates whatever the movie, though.
What you said!
Oh, speaking of Cruise, I don't know if you caught this item yet...
TOM CRUISE BIDS FAREWELL TO EARTH
Returns to Planet of Origin on Eve of Films Debut

Actor Tom Cruise stunned the worlds of cinema and space travel today, bidding Earth farewell forever as he returned to his planet of origin.
At a launch pad on the outskirts of Malibu constructed specifically for his intergalactic journey, Mr. Cruise spoke briefly to friends, well-wishers, and Larry King, who was covering the launch for CNN.
Farewell, earthlings, Mr. Cruise told the crowd. My work here is done.
The actor then engaged in a twenty-minute kiss with his fiancée, Katie Holmes, whom he said he would send for later.
Boarding the spaceship, Mr. Cruise delighted the crowd with the thumbs-up gesture he immortalized in the film Top Gun, then told them, I feel the need
for speed, before disappearing into the stratosphere.
While many had expected Mr. Cruise to return to his own planet at some point, the timing of his departure took many by surprise, coming as it did on the eve of the debut of his summer blockbuster, War of the Worlds.
Executives at Paramount Pictures, who produced the film, expressed concern that Mr. Cruises departure from the solar system would limit his availability to appear on the late-night talk shows.
But according to Buddy Schlantz, a veteran talent agent and observer of the Hollywood scene, Mr. Cruises decision to return to his planet before the films opening may be a masterstroke: If Tom Cruise wanted to do something to make himself more popular, leaving Earth forever was a great place to start.
Elsewhere, in a deeply divided decision, the United States Supreme Court allowed the Texas State Capitol to display The Five Commandments.
I hope it's true, and I hope it leads to better things. Maybe the others are laying up in a cave? Stranger things have happened.
That's great news. I hope others are alive and can be rescued, too. Our warriors deserve our lasting respect and gratitude.
Hopefully they are alive and we never hear the "true" story....I don't need to know , I need to know operational security was maintained etc etc.....
Thanks for the ping.....Stay safe !
You bet.
thanks for the clarification ... as I paid a wee bit more attention to the news coverage, I figured that out. Guess I was hoping there was a survivor from the crash. Again, as far as I'm concerend, the less media coverage on what these teams do, the better.
THANK YOU GOD! I've been praying about this for days. I hope they can find the others quickly.
Yeah, hopefully the others exfiltrated out and are trying to make contact. Time will tell. This guy's already on his way to Ramstein to get fixed up. Should be an interesting de-brief.
'Rescued?'
I'd take issue with that characterization.
It sounds like these guys were out there on an intelligence gathering mission.
Not being military I'm unfamiliar with the terminology, but would not 'extracted' be more appropriate?
Thank God.
