Well...we are 37 minutes into the supposed "global concert of a lifetime" and MTV has managed to show 12 minutes of commercials for reality programming, interrupted 3 performances, and have shown a highlights package from the UK with the biggest names of the day already performing.
Yep. MTV has found a way to not show music on a day where music is all around them. So away with the Live 8 thread....
I have AOL and I am choosing not to be forced to watch a concert of this magnitude on a computer monitor. Did they just cut Bon Jovi off in the middle of their song for a commercial?
Err, make that 1985
Bon Jovi cut off right in the middle of their song. Something you would NOT have seen in 1985.
You don't need to use AOL, but there don't seem to be any commercials on the net feed.
The London feed is just a live shot of the empty stage.
So far the show has failed in Japan and ironically...South Africa...
Small early audience at Johannesburg concert

The Live 8 concert in Johannesburg opened before a slowly growing crowd Saturday in a working-class neighbourhood of the South African city.
Officials have not confirmed whether former South African president Nelson Mandela will speak at the event.

The concert and global broadcast began with a rousing performance by 4Peace Ensemble. Other performers taking the stage Saturday include veteran singing group Mahotella Queens, rapper Zola, reggae king Lucky Dube, Orchestre Baobab and singer Oumou Sangare.
Though other Live 8 concerts distributed tickets through text message lotteries and via websites, the concert at Johannesburg's Mary Fitzgerald Square has been left open meaning the event could possibly draw the largest audiences of any of 10 affiliated free concerts taking place around the world. However, early reports say the crowd is still sparse, at between 5,000 and 7,000 people.
The Johannesburg concert follows the Tokyo opener, at which an estimated 10,000 people watched acts like singer Björk, rockers Good Charlotte and Japanese rap-rock band Rize.
The South African concert and "Africa Calling" in Cornwall, England organized by Peter Gabriel and featuring some of Africa's most well known musicians were added to the Live 8 bill after main organizer Bob Geldof and his multi-nation event were criticized for a lack of African artists and performers, despite the goal of raising awareness of the continent's plight.
Organizers aim to spur massive global awareness of the poverty in Africa and urge the leaders of the G-8 nations to dramatically improve aid to the continent, improve trade practices and completely cancel debt poor African nations owe to wealthy western countries.
African organizers have said that Saturday's concert will serve as the launch of Standing Tall Against Poverty, a concert series that will continue with shows in Kenya and Ghana in the coming months.
I am very disappointed that GWB didn't take a principled stand and say "NO, not another DIME until Africa cleans up the Zimbabwe mess. Enough is enough."
This is the BIGGEST bunch of BS ever. "Raising awareness" my ass. Makes themselves feel better, doesn't change a thing in Africa.
Like the Viacommies can't spare a few hours worth of commercials for such a worthy cause?
Massive exercise in "feel-goodism."
"Won't change a thing in Africa."
If it weren't so tragic it would be laughable. After all the money comes in to pay for the concert promoters, roadies, staff, etc., etc., basically overhead to mount such an event(s) maybe the poor starving, dieing Africans will get one tenth of one percent of the Live Ate concert proceeds, that's if they're lucky enough.
my daughter is there , sshheeeeesh , LIVE ACHE
This whole thing screams, "We're not going to give OUR money, but YOU can give YOURS! We're so honorable for raising awareness!"
the cnn.com poll is funny...
Do you plan to watch Live 8 concerts:
In person
On television
On Web site
There is NO option for NO I am not watching the liberal hippie drug fest of a horrible rock concert to make our liberal elites feel good about themselves.
They cut Bon Jovi off so they could show some commercials before going to the London show so they could show Coldplay.
MTV will throw anyone off the side for the latest fad.
Go ask Kofi, his son and unHolywood to cough it up.
Reminds me of the left with the "no child left behind act". IMHO it had nothing to do with "we need mo money", rather it was meant to require accountability to those already paid and entrusted to teach "our children" by gauging progress through tests, etc. What does that have to do with dollars? To use this logic, I pay some guy a fair price to paint my house. He does a crappy job, then I have to pay him more to do it right the second time, third time.....
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime"
My wife and I spent part of the yesterday down there, watching things get set up. We'll wander over later on, just to see the spectacle, because we can walk there.
I guess they had to pay for the celebrity gift bags...
