Sheriff's officials still are reluctant to release many details of the murder of Slade, his 40-year-old mother, Brenda Groene, and Brenda's 37-year-old boyfriend, Mark McKenzie. Details that only the murderer would know are more valuable to the investigation when only the detectives know them, he said.
Watson said his opinion – not necessarily backed by the evidence, he cautioned – is that the crime was premeditated because the killer or killers brought items to the scene to carry out the crime.
"It wasn't spontaneous," he said. Still, it doesn't fit any traditional crime scenes in his experience, he said.
"It was a highly emotional crime scene, a violent crime scene," he said. "Real violent crimes are usually driven by love, money or drugs."
But Groene and McKenzie didn't have a lot of money, nor did they appear to be heavily involved in drugs, he said. While the two adult victims did have methamphetamine and marijuana in their systems, according to the autopsy, Watson described them more as recreational users.
"This is what I would expect (from) a Colombia drug lord sending a message to a dealer," he said. "But these people didn't have big drug or money issues."
While the two grown Groene sons have had criminal convictions, and 18-year-old Jesse Groene is awaiting sentencing on a burglary charge, Watson described their involvement with law enforcement as "small time stuff, nothing to warrant this."
There was also speculation that they knew this guy and he had been at the party the night they had it.
I wondered about that but you'd think that LE would have checked out everybody who went to the party. But maybe not.
I want to know more about that crime scene....something dramatic happened and I think it points to a sicko pyschopath.

So they know something from the crime scene, and they seem to be thinking it was premeditated.
Yo, RFF. Manipulative is right...I just worry about what Shashta might have been forced to watch--as if murder of her mother wasn't enough. Did you see the film of her in school taken a few weeks before the kidnapping? A most delightful, intelligent, upbeat little sweetie in spite of the fact that mom was a druggie and an older brother a convict. Clearly, she had much more potential than her Deliverance family members.

By all accounts, Mrs. Groene's
boyfriend was a really nice guy,
was good to Mrs. Groene
& loved her & the kids.
This was stated by family members
right after the murders/kidnapping.

After reading, compliments of the links on this thread just a few minutes ago....I KNOW there are probably hundreds. We may never know how many innocent adults and children have died at the hands of this animal.
WHY, after HIS RECORD, was this thing allowed loose on bail, just to abscond and disappear so he could kill untold more people and permanently traumatize survivors like Shasta Groene? Why, when his stolen vehicle was stopped, wasn't his driver's lisence checked against the PLATE number?
On another, bitter note, I'm surprised this thread hasn't been hijacked by the "but if we just LEGALIZE drungs and TAX them, all of our problems will be solved" crowd.
This case totally ruined my July Fourth weekend.

I doubt very much if the father of the Groenes had anything at all to do with this. Didn't he take a lie detector test right away?
The pervert Joseph Duncan was watching those kids and watching that house. He was stalking his prey. He came to the house equipped for mayhem and perversion.
Do the LEA know what his address was in Coeur D'Alene? Maybe he was staying at a motel. He left Fargo on May 5, and these crimes occurred in C D'A on May 11? (Not sure of the timeline).
Duncan would have had at least a few days to choose his victims and spy on them. I think he acted alone. From all reports, he was a loner. He had karate experience, and was in good physical shape. He probably went in in the early hours of the morning, took the family by surprise, tied them up one by one. Secured Dylan and Shasta in restraints in his vehicle. Went back and bludgeoned the three to death.
He had been fantasizing about such a crime for a long time. This family presented the ideal conditions.

Arrogent, highly intelligent, amphetomine addicted psychopath. The first speed freak I ever came across, decades ago, was trying to beat people to death while swearing to anyone who'd listen that he was Satan, and that he fell like rain. Sick SOB. Sick before the drugs; far, far sicker AFTER.
insantity defenses don't cut it
anymore. Where there's planning,
secrecy involved. We have plenty
of that in this case.
Also, many states no longer have
insanity as a defense.
